“Mary, Did You Know?” is another modern Christmas classic. The song debuted in 1991, but the lyrics were written in 1984 by Mark Lowry, who is more known as a Christian comedian. At the time, Lowry and Michael English, who first recorded the song, were members of the Gaither Vocal Band.
There are many haters who point to Luke 1:35 and say, “Of course Mary knew! The angel told her!”
But did she really know? How could Mary have comprehended who Jesus would grow up to be or the impact that he would have on the world for centuries to come? How could any of us have known? It is hard enough to comprehend when we look back with the full Bible in hand as our guide.
If you don’t buy that, just consider the song a rhetorical question.
This version of the song is by Danny Gokey, a contemporary Christian musician who placed third in the eighth season of American Idol. Steve once had the pleasure of working the lights and sound for Gokey, who was performing at Steve’s church.
Actually just the lights. And I shared that duty. He had his own sound guy. But it was still a pleasure.
LIttle Drummer Boy better be number 1 or this list is crap!
