Christmas carol countdown #8

"Christmas 1915" by Celtic Thunder

This is another atypical pick, but it appeals to the history nut in me. It is also a very moving song.

The song tells the true story of the spontaneous Christmas truce in World War I. The sampling of “Silent Night,” originally a German carol, is both historically accurate and underscores the temporary lull in the brutal fighting in the trenches.

“Christmas 1915” is a song of the best and worst instincts of man. The triumph of coming together to celebrate Christmas is overcome by the tragedy of resumed killing the next day.
