Christ was almost surely not born on December 25th, but the pagans of old had great winter solstice celebrations to mark the coming of spring and new life. Metaphorically it fits well, and you could tell the Pagans whatever you want about being spiritually born again but if you took away their holidays they were going to riot, so the church co-opted the winter solstice to create the Christ Mass.
