Erick Erickson has a different take on what the American people want. He claims they want the border closed, not hundreds of pages of legislation, and I agree. He goes on to state that Republican and democrat liars in congress and the administration have doomed the legislation by lying and losing trust. Specifically, by denying the president can shut down the border. Henry Cuellar (D) and various Republican legislators have also out that the President can control alien inflow. Unfortunately, it is ignored by most pundits and opinion site commenters.

8 U.S. Code § 1182 - Inadmissible aliens | U.S. Code | US Law | LII / Legal Information Institute (cornell.edu)

(f)SUSPENSION OF ENTRY OR IMPOSITION OF RESTRICTIONS BY PRESIDENT

Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate. Whenever the Attorney General finds that a commercial airline has failed to comply with regulations of the Attorney General relating to requirements of airlines for the detection of fraudulent documents used by passengers traveling to the United States (including the training of personnel in such detection), the Attorney General may suspend the entry of some or all aliens transported to the United States by such airline.

Not sure Erick’s take is different. More focused on details. I think a more effective communicator as president could explain the problem and the bill simply and get the nation behind it. But Biden is not up to the task.

Maybe. Erick does mention the possibility 4999 asylum claims per day. There are flaws and waste in the bill. I'm less accepting of serious imperfections than most people who just want something done. I've come to accept lies from politicians as normal, but some excesses are hard to swallow.

Joe is speaking now starting off with a slam at MAGA and Trump. and then proceeding to, once again, lie about not having authority to close the border.

You can cling to Erick's comments Curtis, but the reality of it all is well explained in Steve's comments above, this bill is wanted/expected by the vast majority of American's. Sorry, but the maga-mob doesn't come close to fitting that bill. The immigration issue should have been addressed years back, it's been sorely needed for a very long time.

Every time i hear or read about how we've got to "deport them all," i pray someone delivers on that idiocy and we can watch damned near every industry in the country shut down. We would collapse the US economy and we would grind to a standstill. It's that freaking simple.

But alas, the real problem with playing the game of hiding the sausage and not passing the bill is what happens to the MUCH needed funding of our allies? Oh wait, the new republican party is now embracing putin/russia (how's the trip to russia going tucker?) with open arms.

It's the new normal out of the gop...and it pathetic to watch unfold. Pass the bill and start doing your jobs.

Immigration laws could be better. This bill is not the way to get there. I've seen no evidence that most people want it, but everything is debatable. If all laws were completely clear in their intent, we would have very little need for lawyers. Erickson probably has as good a feel as Steve for public opinion. I respect them both.

I do not believe for a minute that illegals keep our economy going. I worked 43 years, most of it in management positions, for a Fortune 500 company. I can say for certain that we never knowingly hired illegals or relied on contractors that did.

Funding our allies is easy enough. All it takes is democrats agreeing to a true compromise that minimizes illegal border crossings, restricts asylum claims to what can be processed quickly with clear criteria, doesn't provide illegals with lawyers, doesn't bail out sanctuary cities, requires employers to verify immigration status and makes a serious start toward deporting illegals already here.

Don't take my word for what the bill says; Here's Lankford's comments: "This authority is a 5,000 authority to say if you get to 5,000, which we've been there every single day except for seven in the last four months, that it completely closes the border down. It deports everyone. It changes the paradigm from right now – what the Biden administration is doing is catching and releasing everyone – to actually catching and deporting everyone. It literally flips the script on it," said Lankford, calling out critics on the right for making "absurd" claims about the provision.

As far as the impact on the workforce, Steven Camarota (hardly a leftie by anyone's stretch of the imagination) has testified on the impact of illegals on the workforce. His contention is all those jobs (9 to 12 million) would and could be replaced by disgruntled white guys who really want the jobs but can't compete.

I've been out of the workforce for 20 years and even back then the meat packing business was dominated by Latino's. Today it is ten-fold worse. In fact, if you want to see the data regarding where all those jobs are (by industry), it's included in his report. Obviously it varies from industry to industry. You can read it here: https://cis.org/sites/default/files/2023-09/Camarota-testimony-9-13.pdf

So, is 4999 asylum scammers per day acceptable?

Regarding disgruntled white guys and illegals, it doesn't have to be that way. I worked in the meat packing business as a teenager. It's not unbearable. You just have to get used to the smell just as you would at a paper plant or some chemical plants. I've been around the meat packing business much of my life having grown up where that was the biggest industry around. When I left to attend college and go into the US Army, all those jobs were done by locals who were USA citizens. Within a few years after I returned to Georgia and I spent more time with my parents who were getting old, I found the hospital ERs were crowded out the door by non-English speaking people. The schools were overcrowded by hundreds of children who knew no English. There were two Spanish language movie rental stores. All of that in a town that had an official population of 3200 - only about 500 more than when I was in high school.

The cost of unfettered immigration far exceeds any value the illegals might add. The jobs could be done by citizens if they weren't allowed to live (often in a communal environment) on welfare, earned income credits, Medicaid, SNAP benefits and criminal enterprises.

That's not what the bill does.

It's "if there's 5000 encounters, shut down asylum claims". That means if 6000 people show up and are turned away, then it's triggered.

And you're wrong about immigrants: they are a net benefit.

If only 4999 show up and they are all claiming asylum, they will be accepted. The cartels are smart and will adjust.

It's obvious that that I was referring to unfettered immigration and illegal immigration - at least to most people. Immigration can definitely be a positive if it's controlled and vetted.

Biden is going to address the nation. Not sure when. He is not a particularly effective speaker but I’m sure he will read a speech from the teleprompter in 48 pt typeface.

He will focus on the border and Ukraine. If he had better rhetorical skills, he’d start by telling Republicans “shame on you!” and continue from there. But I wager he won’t.

I was going to write Joe would be addressing it by the weekend, so good to hear he is doing it sooner. No question, Biden's not the loudmouth spitting and shouting fool trump is, but he has worked hard to build bi-partisan support any number of times over the past three years. It would have been foolish to start lobbying for passage before the house or the senate started pissing on it. Now that we've seen the game, it's time to leverage the bully pulpit of the office to make those in the shit show party be exposed for what and who they are...trump lackeys.
