In the Disney case, I may be mildly pro-DeSantis on this one. Not so much for WHY he's going after Disney (culture war BS), but if Disney enjoys a sweetheart deal in Florida that its competitors wouldn't be able to replicate, then I won't mourn FL GOP members taking away its special status.
Of course, should DeSantis prevail, I'll also fully support Disney's move to a more hospitable locale, say, to a state like Colorado[1]:
"The Florida governor has also proposed to dissolve the special tax status for Disney World that has been in place for 55 years in retaliation to the entertainment giant’s opposition to what critics have dubbed the state’s 'Don’t Say Gay' law."
"In response, Polis tweeted that the two companies could find a home in Colorado, rather than dealing with 'Florida’s authoritarian socialist attacks on the private sector.'"
"Polis claimed that DeSantis’s measures were driving away private business in a way that would not happen in the Centennial State."
"'In CO, we don’t meddle in affairs of companies like @Disney or @Twitter,' Polis wrote. 'Hey @Disney we’re ready for Mountain Disneyland and @Twitter we’re ready for Twitter HQ2, whoever your owners are.'"
I guess Colorado works since Disney will undoubtedly bake the cake, although Colorado winters might dampen some of year-round tourism that benefits Disney in Florida.
Florida could respond by subsidizing a right-wing theme park on Disney’s old turf. Trump World? Of course, that’s pretty much how we got we got to where we are now.
Trump World, brilliant David. The home of the grifters, charlatans and con men who could bilk the rubes out of their hard earned dollars and never have to worry about charges being brought against them. OMG, the vista opens, the clouds part and the images of the MAGA millions endlessly lined up in the cattle lines simply throwing their money over the rails and no rides to ultimately arrive on is precious.
Imagine the massive performance arena where rallies could be held day and night, no more renting locations, make them come to him. Thousands of vendors selling the trump-humper items with the orange guy getting a royalty off every piece sold. Sky-boxes for corporate seating and huge write-offs as a business expense.
Picture the stop the steal ride (actually nothing there but a fake Capital building for them to wander through; target shooting at liberals with trump flags and hats as prizes; and the ultimate, thousands of cutouts of trump himself where for just $29.99 they can get an almost real photo of him smiling with the rubes in the always beloved thumbs up sign. OMG, the list is endless.
Perhaps the best news of all is he will be raking in so much money, he'll decide to just get richer. Damn, i almost wish i hadn't written this, the impetus for DeSantis to act.
The issue comes down to the reason why they're removing these special districts. If this was a general sort of removal because they decided it doesn't make sense anymore - that's one thing. Doing it due to speech? Pretty sure they're gonna end-up paying a lot of lawyers fees for Disney.
I don't understand what his endgame is. It will be interesting to see if this helps or hurts his reelection. Does the general population of Florida like the idea of driving out their largest employer? Who brings in billions every year. You make Florida an undesirable location for tourism and you are going to wreck your state.
According to a golf buddy who retired from Disney, Disneyworld and local lodgings are crowded with patrons. That's from his son who is currently employed there. The place would not be nearly as profitable in another state. I may be wrong, but I think most people with kids who want to get warm in a welcoming state just do not care about the cultural squabbles. I do and some of you do because we're nerdy that way.
A lot of right wingers will stay away in protest but that will just make it easier for others to get reservations. A lot of left wingers will bitch about DeSantis but that will not generate enough votes to elect Nikki Fried or Charlie Crist (who is just as orange as Donald Trump).
I believe this is correct. I know people who will stay away from Disney but their kids are grown and their "sacrifice" is not really evident. I have always had a good time going to WDW, taking Disney cruises, staying at their resorts. There is a business reason DIS poked its nose in politics this time, and unfortunately Republicans dance on the end of a string in response. It's theater but this move will cost Florida billion$$$ and cost Disney nothing (in fact they may profit).

DWAC shareholders[1] get in for a discount, like bringing a Coke can to Six Flags.

If all of this gets me into the new Star Wars hotel earlier than the alternate universe where people govern as adults, SIGN ME UP.
Halycon, get ready!
