It would be awesome if this did nothing but put Temu and Shein out of business. But did this get rolled back with the rest of Trump's fake proposals?

I asked ChatGPT and it said:

Yes, President Trump’s decision on February 3, 2025, to delay the implementation of tariffs on Canada and Mexico for 30 days also postponed the suspension of the “de minimis” exemption for trade with these countries. The “de minimis” exemption allows shipments valued under $800 to enter the U.S. duty-free. Initially, the new tariff orders included clauses suspending this exemption for Canada, Mexico, and China, citing concerns over inadequate inspection of packages and the facilitation of fentanyl shipments. However, with the 30-day pause in tariffs for Canada and Mexico, the suspension of the “de minimis” exemption for these two countries has also been delayed. As a result, the exemption remains in effect for Canada and Mexico during this period. It’s important to note that the suspension of the “de minimis” exemption for China proceeded as planned.

I don't know. I am not sure Trump sorts out any details when he makes a "deal." I am not sure anyone knows the answer yet.

"The problem is that CBP doesn’t have near the staffing or capacity to screen the $4.7 billion of low-value exempted shipments from China, never mind shipments from Mexico and Canada."

The real issue: we don't fund CBP (of other areas of the government) to the level needed for them to perform their duties as desired by the populace.

That's true. Unfortunately, no matter what the Feds do, some segment of the populace will want more of it and an offsetting segment of the populace will want less of it.

Ah, but the question is "Who doesn't want to increase funding for CBP to secure our border?" and the answer there from recent evidence is the GOP.

This is just farcical at this point: Mexico's president is saying the tariffs have been delayed a month.

If fentanyl is really such a big issue and the most relevant part of these tariffs, *why delay*?

Trump blinked when the stock market dropped.

Update: Canada tariffs on hold too. My understanding is Trump is claiming Canada's announced investment of $1.3bil towards their border security/immigration that occurred in December is the "policy win".

Just...utter idiocy.

Old Trump book at this point. Create a problem. Say you fixed the problem you created. Have all your trained monkeys talk about how amazing you are for fixing the problem you created with things that were done before you got there. And once again its working.
