To my knowledge public health officials only made recommendations that legislators and/or governors then put into action. And: some actions, like the NY nursing home debacle, were driven solely by the governor without recommendation by public health officials.
Another good example here is how much blame Anthony Fauci receives, when in reality it was Donald Trump that made decisions about how the Federal government would approach COVID. Sometimes he listened, and sometimes he didn't: but ultimately Fauci had zero power to do anything but advise the president.
Steven, I sure hope you aren't trying to compare Trump to Herod. That would be a shameful thing, and you ought to apologize right now. I have said that i would never vote for Trump, and I haven't, but to engage in such vitriolic, hateful rhetoric, i certainly would not, and you have gone too far, my friend. I would almost expect such from David Thornton, but from you? Wow, just wow.
Well, then we will just agree to disagree on the point of us allowing government to pursue power for power's sake. Yes, Trump is doing some things that might be extra-constitutional, or unconstitutional, but name a President that hasn't. That goes all the way back to Lincoln. As Jay said, our system of checks and balances should protect against tyranny. And if they don't, we probably won't have a country, at least as we have known it.
Then I must have misinterpreted what you were saying, and I apologize to you if I did, but the tone of the article seemed to suggest that you were trying to tie the two together.
The tie is that when we have given permission to our human government to pursue power for power's own ends (and we're definitely doing that), we are on the road to tyranny. Herod pursued power for its own ends but could not overcome the salvation offered by Christ. That is still the answer for us today.
Our constitutional checks and balances are designed to safeguard tyranny. Let’s see how they are tested going forward.

Umm, no. I didn’t compare Trump to Herod. It never occurred to me to do that.
I thought tyrants seek to expand the size and role of government. Trump is trying to shrink, dismantle, and return certain functions to the states.
I don’t think the size of government is relevant to what a tyrant does. It is related to liberty and basic decency.
Government is required to enforce the tyranny.
