It's not that Sherman's strategy worked, there are other factors at work.
First, like it or not, Confederacy may have served an evil cause but it was also governed by rule of law and democratic process (at least for the whites only). Hamas, and really for all Palestinians, don't have that. Hamas is not governing by rule of law but rather by terror. Even Palestinian Authority doesn't have that either. In the other words, Southerners were a far more civilized people. At least they fought fair and square with some exceptions, and thankfully elite Southerners called for laying down arms when surrender came. I can't envision Palestinians doing that at all.
Second, reconciliation is a powerful tool, Lincoln understood this. With charity toward all and no malice. Because of the rule by law, we were able to reconcile with each other through pardoning of the rebels and compromising by withdrawing federal troops from the South. Again, can we really see that happening with Palestinians? No way. They don't have a Limcoln to lead the way.
Rule of law and reconciliation process are important tools, they won't prevent wars from breaking out, but it provides an outlet or a way for warring parties to settle and sue for peace. Without these tools, wars become existential threats that engulfs the entire societies and are ripe for senseless wanton destruction of life (see Russia and Germany in WW2). We had these tools which prevented the complete destruction of Japanese society even though Japanese military wanted to continue fighting despite the dropping of atomic bombs.
I hate to say this, but it's difficult to see how Palestinians can do better and seek for a way to live peacefully with Jews.
