The likely buyout payments, if they ever do materialize, will be in the form of Trump Steak Subscriptions, Vouchers for Trump Air and discount codes for Trump University.

Haha 🤣. In reality it’s just 8 months of severance pay and benefits. It’s not a lump sum. Just stay on the rolls until the end of September.

If I were them, I wouldn't hold my breath that Trump or DOGE/Musk will actually keep their word.

These things were expected and warned of by many. Others are asking WHAT? I find no satisfaction in saying I told you so.

Can someone explain how Meals on Wheels and Head Start programs fit their explanation? Medicaid?

Congress needs to wake up before we have a King and no Republic to defend.

Realistically, Mr. Trump has between 18 and 42 months to make good on whichever of his election promises are even possible. That's a tall order even in a Fortune 500 bureaucracy. It's nearly impossible in something so cumbersome as the federal government. There's no way to align a few million Trump haters and media reporters who will oppose anything Trump does or proposes just because it's Trump. There will always be whining from bureaucrats, special interest groups and NGOs who are losing their seat on the gravy train. There are approximately 250 congress critters who will oppose almost anything Trump does or says, and they all have big audiences.

He is doing what he needs to do to make the changes he promised. He will win some and lose some of the battles. He and his advisors will have to deal with the blowback and make adjustments as necessary. Most of those involved in pushing the President's agenda are as smart as the critics. If they fail, they can be criticized and kicked out of office. I hope they succeed.

Oh, this is a good one:

~85% of the 10,000 patent office employees are teleworkers, dating back to a 1997 agreement. Those jobs require an engineering degree and learning patent law.

Those jobs are gonna be hard to fill, and any substantial number of departures is gonna lead to delays in getting patents issued.

The sad thing is that white women saw the greatest benefits from what is called DEI - aka equal opportunity policies - with something like 20% of all C-suite positions held by white women vs 4% by minority women. Wonder how much backsliding will occur there

It's pretty obviously illegal for POTUS/the executive to try to impound funds appropriated by Congress for specific purposes. Recall in 2019 that this came up before re Ukraine aid passed by Congress and withheld by Trump without following the Inpoundm etc Control Act of 1974: this doesn't seem much different.

Regarding the "buyout": it's not a buyout. The text of the letter says that if they choose to resign, then they'll be allowed to telework until Sept 30 and then leave their jobs. There's no bulk payment - just getting their regular pay and benefits.

No. Once they accept the deferred resignation, they are placed (at some point, but I haven’t seen the date or timeline) on administrative leave, meaning they don’t have to work at all. The leave extends to September 30, 2025. It is in all respects a buyout or severance agreement, unless the employees somehow are expected to continue to work while on administrative leave.
