In 2016 and 2024, I was invited to apply to be a state delegate for Kasich and Hayley (the GOP must be scraping the bottom of the barrel looking for Republicans in Chicago), but never made it past that part, as the candidates flamed out before the state conventions.
Yes, I have. The hard way. See this guy in my profile picture here? That's my cat: Marco Rubio Soltis. (The cat BTW is very disappointed in the Senator.)
I lived in New Jersey & actually distributed flyers for Ike’s opponent Bob Taft; but I was too young to vote then. I never went to a national convention but the State conventions were basically back room deals. They worked pretty well because everyone understood that no idiots were allowed to run for anything important. The D’s worked the same way. Then democracy arrived & the big boys had to figure out new ways to make things turn out the way they wanted. It usually works but sometimes a highly skilled upstart gets through. The new way is better.
I won't bore you with the nuances of the democrats in Minnesota. Same shit different party.
I loved your closing comment M: "Given the opportunity, I would love to punch him in the face." Oddly that sentiment sweeps across the wide breath of those on show this week in Milwaukee. But alas, we cannot talk that way because we would be accused of inciting violence and encouraging someone to try and shoot the president in the head. I'm not sure why he went for the head, a body shot provided a much larger target. Anyway, thank god (small g) he missed.
The above summary aptly describes exactly how we got here. Too few people having too much control. "we the people, indeed."
Not much for watching the republican convention, but i did watch the night Ted Cruz had his finest (and perhaps his only) moment. It was exceptional. And then, he slipped on the knee pads and became yet another to succumb to the lusts of the man child. Terrifying, truly terrifying to watch trump humiliate the staggering long line of what were at one time, "true conservatives."
In the end, you have to ask yourself: were they ever really even conservatives? Or, were they just hungry for power...at whatever cost. Kudos and shout out to preserving your integrity Merrie.

So, have you learned not to associate anything resembling integrity with a political process?
