1. As the resident weird comic book nerd, I won't stop involuntarily twitching until I point out the the BIG Comic Con is in San Diego, not Anaheim. Anaheim does have its own comic convention (WonderCon, run by the same folks that put on San Diego's "Comic Con International"), but it ranks behind not only San Diego, but the New York Comic Con (run by a different company), and Chicago's C2E2 (run by the same folks who run the NYCC).
2. I think you have a typo above in the phrase "attack groomers" when you meant to say "attract groomers".
3. I have no idea what's up with the number 14 and how it attracts crazy people.
I'm old, and i live in a bubble. My philosophy is simple; if i can't get there on my golf car, i don't go. Consequently, those weird good things are mostly foreign to me. On the upside is another pragmatic approach i try hard to embrace; to each their own, We often ponder about the next generation of home buyers in our senior community and what they will want. This article makes it clear, i have no clue.
The bad weird is a whole other discussion. All of which can be summarized with a single word question: "Why?" How did we get here? A point where chaos, hatred and vitriol are the new normal. Sorry, i cannot even begin to grasp the loss of norms and any sense of right and wrong. There's always been evil people, they've always been a small minority of the population.
The scary bad weird is they are growing on a daily basis. Thank God i am old.
I hear you. In some respects the old guy bubble is self imposed. It has taken many years to reach the scary bad weird. Affluence, erosion of institutions, individual isolation, and more, has got us here. Golf cart is a good place.
Good article. You might have left yourself open to accusations of projection when you express some amount of doubt about letting your kids accompany people, whom you otherwise trust, on some weird activities. I agree with you, but amateur psychologists have adopted "projection" as a favorite word.
Projecting? I wouldn’t let my kids run off with myself (if I’m not their dad) in a van to a war gaming weekend. Then again my kids friends say I’m cool, which is high praise.
I'm sure you are cool. But any hint that groomers really exist or that democrat motives might not be entirely pure often elicit comments about projection, the liberal attempt to end discussion because they have no further arguments. I see it daily on opinion web sites.
The statements about projection are typically triggered by yet another pastor/minister/elected GOP/etc... being arrested for child pornography or child sex abuse.
Could be but I haven't noticed that. I do read a lot of right-wing opinion sites and I mostly remember "projection" as a term used by left-wing dissident commenters (sometimes trolls) when they can't think of anything else to say. I remember Bill O'Reilly referring to Lexis Nexis to establish linkage between published information and media sources and political bias. I don't believe I could afford Lexis Nexis to check it out. Nonetheless, I feel confident the term is becoming more widely used. Right wingers make similar statements but do not generally say projection. They usually say: "They accuse us of what they are doing". I think it's all BS.
You should go look up how many right wingers are arrested for child porn and sex abuse, and compare to how many of the groups claimed to be groomers (e.g. drag queens and trans people) have been.
Or for a less disturbing example: how many examples of people being arrested for vote fraud and their party affiliations.
I did and found that very few cases of voter fraud have been prosecuted. Could be an accurate indicator or could be a lack of interest on the part of law enforcement. I'm sure right- and left-wingers are guilty.
I found some information on pedophilia that indicated a greater tendency toward pedophilia by persons with sexual aberrations. No information on a percentage by political persuasion.
Fun piece!
A couple thoughts / notes:

I didn’t realize the difference between the San Diego and Anaheim Comic-Con sites. My bad. I fixed the typo.
I don't frequently get a chance to let my inner Comic Shop Guy out of the my mental back-issue bins, so thank you for providing the opening. :-)
