It is not that people who were here temporarily weren't "sponging", the problem is that they are filling a job that a citizen, usually a poorer, less educated citizen, might fill. Both for that citizen's mental state and the nation's economy, it is better for the citizen to have a job than be on welfare. While we do have some responsibility for people everywhere, we have a greater responsibility for our own citizens, and that responsibility has been neglected recently. .
Easy to say, hard to find data to support it. It’s just not true. It has NEVER been true. They said the same things about Chinese immigrants building the railroads in the late 1800s, but Americans didn’t want those jobs. They said the same thing about Mexicans framing houses and replacing roofs, but Americans don’t want those jobs. I can go on. The people who are being sent back include those who entered as students, attended our universities, without displacing a single American, and work at tech jobs, competing in the same market as Americans. This is not outsourcing tech jobs to India or Pakistan. It’s people who want to live here and become Americans. We are making the same error that previous generations of isolationists and xenophobes made, and believing the same wrong assumptions.
When 30% or more of students at top rated Universities are foreigners, many of whom return home,( and more of whom are supposed to return home), do not tell me that these people are not taking a place that a citizen of the US would love to fill.
With such a large contingent of foreign rich ( or government supported,) students paying full price so these schools can have more deans than professors and so many students take leading edge tech back home AND so many take jobs that US students would have qualified for IF they were admtted., something is wrong. And no job is unfillable unless it pays less than welfare.
Farmers have alternatives to illegal labor. There are workers who get temporary permits and return annually. The reason able-bodied citizens will not accept the work is they can stay in NYC or Chicago or LA and survive on welfare and criminal enterprise. The incentives are inadequate to overcome decades of cultural decline.
Those TPS immigrants you are so concerned about could return to their native countries and make them better. If they really are industrious. If they have really learned anything useful during their temporary stay. If the liberal propaganda about how wonderful they are is true, the TPS immigrants could be running their nations in a few years.
Who's killing them? The USA has contributed about a billion dollars in aid to Haiti in recent years. If the Haitian government is doing the killing, we aren't applying the correct incentives to our relationship with them.
The same applies to the argument that immigrants (TPS and illegal) are doing the work that Americans will not do. The fact is that employers deliberately choose illegals because they work cheaper. The incentives are wrong or Americans would do the work. If there aren't enough able-bodied jobless citizens, adjust vetted immigration or temporary work permits accordingly.
A little off topic but Chinese laborers were instrumental to building the railroads and also the Augusta Canal along the Savannah River. There was still a small Chinese community in Augusta when I moved there in 1984.
Haiti is a failed state and their government has little power. We have tried to fix Haiti for 100+ years, including occupying it. If we let people in to protect them, sending them back is just ensuring their harm. Why did we even bother in the first place?
Good question. If Haitian presence is vital to the USA and if we can accommodate an unlimited number of unfortunates from all over the world, why don't we build a rescue fleet and bring them here in bigger numbers? The last paragraph was not directed only toward Haitians. Culture encompasses everything in our society - not just food, art and entertainment. If interpreters and bi-lingual signs are required to communicate with certain groups, the culture is changed. If what once was a thirty-minute wait in an ER has become an hours long ordeal, the culture is changed. When street rioting is in support of other nations and foreign flags are being waved, the culture has changed. When the guilty parties in vehicle accidents routinely flee the scene. the culture has changed.
When state and local governments refuse to cooperate with the Feds to enforce the law despite their oath to support the Constitution of the USA, the culture has changed. They once did since it cost them basically nothing. They have now determined that cheap labor and more political power are worth more than maintaining a lawful and orderly nation.
Haitians are cheap labor in the Ohio health care industry. They are also cheap labor in the hospitality business. Cheap labor affects the standard of living which is part of our culture.
