I'm not going to speculate on the killer's motives - given that I haven't followed this story all that closely - but folks beating the anti-Asian racism drum are not doing it in isolation in this particular case, but in a wider context of rising anti-Asian violence during the pandemic.
I have Asian friends who have been worried about their safety throughout the pandemic, and that fear's been escalating in recent weeks. These killings are just another log on the fire.
It seems to me that it’s a stretch to connect anti-Asian worries to this crime in that context. But the giant rise in hate crimes is documented to be overwhelmingly against Jews. Crimes against Jews don’t serve the racial narrative progressives wish to promote.
Interesting - during the Trump era, I saw no shortage of charges of antisemitism, and a pretty strong narrative around evidence of that with the resurgence of calling people Nazis, side-eye every time someone used the terms "globalist" or "cosmopolitan elites". And it seemed like progressives pushing that angle more than anyone else.
You seem to be under the impression that folks can only push one racial narrative at a time, when - in my experience at least - there's several narratives flying around all the time, from progressives and conservatives alike.
This isn't to imply that the Jewish community isn't facing issues similar to what Asians are highlighting these days, but rather that this is a "both/and" situation rather than a simple "either/or".
You would most label me as a "libertard" but would think I would not agree with this article but I do. I actually think you did not go far enough. You left out that sex addiction that is real. One year ago today, I may have thought different. But exactly one year ago, I found that my husband of 20 year is an addict. While he would never kill someone, he did contemplate suicide to end the pain and shame. He has been in treatment and knows many other men (and women) who are sex addicts. And 99% of them would not hurt others but he has met some who did say they thought about it. We need to focus on mental illness. Sex addicts in particular start and stop a lot. They delete the porn app only to add it back on, unsubscribe to porn or escort sites only to resubscribe. They try to remove the temptation and only to be sucked back in. And if you ask any sex addict who frequented massage parlors, they would say that they were serviced by an asian woman. This is not to be racists, it is just a fact, and to ignore the fact is hiding the truth about the sex and porn industry. Porn is highly addictive. Here is a great TEDX on the addictive nature of porn. https://youtu.be/wSF82AwSDiU
Yes, the media may be jumping the gun, but just because a megalomaniac with the appetite to murder quite a number of people says that was not his motivation does not make it so. That will be the subject of law enforcement investigations and a trial. I wouldn’t spend more time worrying about the media blowing this out of proportion. The truth will come out.
Interesting comments and a head scratcher for an article. I suspect there is always a challenge to writing articles almost daily and especially ones that will garner comments. Yesterday, i responded by stating the act was in fact evil. I doubt anyone would argue that. I also attributed it in part to trump”s “legitimizing” these types of crazy.
We could debate whether the shooter’s actions were because he hated sex workers or because they were Asian. Obviously it doesn’t help the police spokesperson addressing the shooting has some history of wearing shirts with Covid 19 on the front and “IMPORTED VIRUS FROM CHY-NA” on the back, or that he said the shooter was “having a bad day.”
It all just sidetracks us from the real issue. As noted by another poster, this is not a new problem. The media has been pointing it out for months. The attacks on Asians have become the new normal. It is disgusting and shameful. And yes Steve, hate crimes against minorities and Jewish people are included in that statement.
That said, here is my question for you: Did trump’s rhetoric and hate filled rants at his rallies contribute in any way to where we are today? As a country, are we worse off because of his presidency and the horrible things he said and tweeted while serving in the White House?
Oh and I liked the picture of the dark skinned man with a head covering when were talking about yet another right wing christian terrorist. You couldn't be more transparent if you tried.
It was the only free image I could find with a newspaper and a face on unsplash which doesn’t require licensing. If you think I really spent time fretting over the skin tone of the face, you’re sadly mistaken.
The fact you don't think the church who taught him to hate himself plays any role in this is just as bad or worse than the media who are jumping to conclusions about race. The SBC sure is good at turning out terrorists. Better than Islam anyday.
Another white man takes out his anger and frustrations on minorities. You might not want to talk about it, and that may just be why it keeps happening. You wanna talk about sex trafficking stats, lets talk about crimes done by white people to minorites in Georgia. Let's see those historic numbers.
He was a sick man who was taught he was sick by the Southern Baptist Church. So he turned his anger and frustration to a bunch of vulnerable Asian women. That's the story. Angry white man with a gun, and a bunch of dead minorities. Sure does happen alot here.
Of course it did. What do you think happens when you tell a kid over and over that sex is a sin and having even sexual thoughts is evil? It's a whole lot easier to murder 8 women than to pluck out your own eyes. Which is stupid by the way, being blind doesn't make you less of a sexual being. The southern baptist church teaches kids to hate themselves just for being human.
I dunno. What happens when you repeatedly tell people they are racist or have unconscious race bias because they are white? White people should hate themselves because of what other white people did 200 years ago. Yeah. And though I am not Baptist and never have been, my experience attending Southern Baptist churches is they do not teach guilt or self hate. They teach self love, God’s love and forgiveness. You have a very skewed view of Christianity and that is sad.
My view of christianity is based on being a child raised in it. My view is based on countless sermons heard in churches all across the country. Baptist churches, both southern and independent. And I heard 10 sermons on the evils of sex for every one about God's love. And not just me, thousands of kids who attended christian camps and outreaches and mission trips. We were all there together hearing things like, condoms don't work. My personal favorite though was the whole sermon about how evil Magic Johnson was when he opened up about having HIV. Of course this was at a christian college that still outlawed mixed dating. That is sad, not my freedom from it.
To me, the only thing that matters is if there actually is a heaven and hell. If there is (and I’m convinced of it) then one’s eternal destiny is the most important item in anyone’s life. To be free of that decision is to ignore the consequences.
To be free from the church doesn't make one an atheist. It just means your done putting up with the child molesters, racists, and ignorant buffoons that fill up the pews of the american church.

Now do Jews.
I'm not quite following. Can you elaborate?

Wow. I’m going to share your comment. People need to hear it.
Just edit the typos :)
