“I’m guessing that a lot of people are engaging in similar calculations as Election Day approaches.” Unfortunately, I’m guessing “not a lot” at least our age. I think people react more reflexively and less thoughtfully out of fear and identity and myth. People are affected by events.
Also, the multiple prosecutions are definitely a sign Trump broke laws. The most important to me is Fulton County. It’s hard to prove it’s not political, and very easy to say it is. Why didn’t the (Republican) Georgia Attorney General empanel the special grand jury? Why Willis? Why anyone? In NY, the kinds of prosecutions thrown at Trump could apply to many real estate developers who run much larger operations. The goal is clearly “stop Trump.” Trump brought the classified misuse upon himself, but did it (I believe) on purpose. He relishes the charges and plans to beat them. He is delusional on that--but I don’t put all my eggs in that basket either. Trump claims it’s politics and if he wins it will justify (to his fans) every abuse of power he plans to commit.
I too prefer less drama and a President who is not Trump, but Joe Biden / Kamala Harris and a democrat congress is not an alternative I would vote for.
Bush / Gore Florida 2000 victory margin - 537 votes. And you propose to cure the ills of the nation by sabotaging a second Trump Presidency to the best of your ability by voting democrat in congressional elections. What do you most fear and hate about Trump? What policies did he actually implement that did irreparable harm? We are no better off now than we were three years ago except for diminishment of the national Covid panic. Judging by recent polls, many voters think we are worse off
It isn’t the drama of a Trump presidency that worries me most. It’s the lawlessness and corruption. The man tried to steal an election, incited his supporters to attack the Capitol, nearly started a civil war, and is running on using government as an implement of revenge.
Every one of those is disqualifying.
This isn’t a policy election. This is a referendum on authoritarianism.
Sorry, David. I do not see any evidence of Trump running on a platform of revenge and authoritarianism. Certainly no more than Biden overturning every effective policy implemented by Trump. The January 6 riot was nothing but a protest turned into a riot such as we have seen in other instances lately that interfered with the conduct of Congressional proceedings. Trump encouraged peaceful protest unlike Schumer who encouraged confronting Supreme Court Justices. The left-wing LaFayette Park rioters that threatened the White House and the President in June of 2020 were just one incident away from a violent assault on the presidency. Those rioters are the ones encouraged by democrat congress critters and the ones you fail to remember.
My opinion is that a lawless, corrupt, socialist Biden / Harris administration with a democrat Congress is far more likely to do permanent damage to the USA.
David, we've been through this before. We see things differently. The interference and non-compliance by DOJ, DOD and other bureaucrats hamstrung the Trump administration. That amounted to the closest thing to an insurrection I have ever seen. Some of the bureaucrats were appointed by Trump but their bureaucratic roots were very apparent. Merciless attack falsehoods by democrats such as Schumer and the press took over the narrative. Falsehoods such as the Charlottesville hoax and the Ukraine complaint by a disgruntled military employee and various State Department bureaucrats who thought they were in charge. The documents case resulted in an espionage charge while Joe Biden gets nothing for mishandling classified documents. The only known real difference is bluster by Trump. Joe also directly threatened withholding funds from Ukraine if they did not do as he asked.
I think some cleaning house in the DC bureaucratic morass is justified. Call it retribution if you like. I would still prefer a smoother approach to attacking the problems. Maybe the Republicans will someday manage to elect a president who can lie like Clinton and Obama and make a lot of voters believe it.
You might stretch a point and label the Capitol riot as sedition, but I do not believe it to be an insurrection. It did interfere with Congressional business but the only demand I heard from Trump was for a peaceful protest.
I do not support siccing the DOJ on anyone for political reasons. Too bad Obama, Biden, various DOJ / FBI officials and local and state elected democrats were never coached that was a no-no when they were hounding Trump and his advisors.

Curtis, he's openly saying it. It's not even a dog whistle.

We do see it differently. There was an actual insurrection, not a figurative one.
And Trump isn’t talking about cleaning the bureaucratic house. He’s talking about siccing the DOJ on people who are critical of him like John Kelly.
You can be a trumper and support what he’s wanting to do, but don’t claim to be a constitutionalist if you do.
