If one is a born-again Christian as I am, one needn't worry about any advantage China might have technologically or Cyber or otherwise. Why? Because God's got this.
"Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”
“Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.”
God's got this, but would we presume to say what he's got? Jesus died for China, as well.
"Then again, maybe I am wrong, and in 1945, America simply would have dropped a lot more atomic bombs than the two we did drop. There’s lots of room and comfy wingback chairs in the alt-history lounge, for musing over cigars and brandy. It’s fun to mull these scenarios, but it never leads anywhere, except to a point I want to make."
How would America have gotten close enough to drop an atomic bomb without carriers?
You're being generous - I was under the impression we had launched those atomic missions via carriers. I had conflated those in my head with Doolittle's raid.
I was not taking that point directly. However without the carriers no way we had unchallenged access to Tinian or other islands within bomber range of the Japanese home islands, never mind enough infrastructure to launch 1,000 bomber raids. So atomic bombs might have been a stretch in 1945. Over Honshu. But maybe we’d have used them in other places to dislodge the IJN.
I have never understood why America has allowed foreign countries to own land in the USA. I know this might sound minor or very basic looking, but maybe we should dissolve any and all land ownership from foreign entities.
Thank you for this very informing article. Makes one think alot deeper now.
'cause from the perspective of the law it's individuals, not countries, that are buying property
We could change the law to only allow legal immigrants, but that's not much of a blocker. Citizens would be better, but that then makes legal immigrants with green cards unable to buy land/houses too.

From Joshua chapter 5.
"Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”
“Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.”

Thanks, Steve. This article is just more evidence of why I read everything you post.

The atomic bombs dropped did not take off via carrier, but maybe your general sentiment is correct.

Ah. The wingback chairs are so comfy and the brandy is calming, brother. Take another puff of that cigar.

So it's not so easy to have a good balance there.
