The issue is that there is a moral component to the complaints about the student loan debt forgiveness that is aimed solely at forgiving debt and not at the type of debt or the method of action taken to get there. That's the hypocrisy.
I do agree that we'd have been better off just paying people directly: unfortunately, I imagine that is too close to welfare for it to be acceptable.
We do indeed need to make real changes to the system, and that requires Congress to actually get off their duffs and pass legislation: I won't be holding my breath.

They can and they did. And considering how the right is losing their minds over it I bet its working so they should keep doing it.
