Pro-life is no longer the apple of Trump's eye as the FDA lets cheap abortion fly
The FDA has retained the Biden administration's lax mifepristone dispensing rules, while approving Evita's cheap generic. The result will be more abortions.
President Donald Trump was the first president to personally attend and address the March for Life in Washington, D.C. That was the first term Trump, #45. Second term Trump, #47, doesn’t have the same devotion to the cause. His HHS secretary, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is skeptical about many drugs, especially vaccines, but not about abortion drugs. The FDA says it had “limited discretion” to deny an application to produce a generic version of a drug that is chemically identical to an already approved version. So Evita, LLC’s application to produce the abortifacient mifepristone was approved. But it was approved without removing any of the Biden administration’s changes that allowed the abortion drug to be dispensed by any pharmacy, in person or by mail.
Before December, 2021, mifepristone could only be dispensed at clinics, medical offices, or hospitals by certified prescribers. Pharmacies could not dispense the drug. The medication had to be given in person to a patient. This allowed a medical professional to review the patient and the case, and to be present to deal with any side effects. And there are side effects. National Review noted the political outrage that has followed the FDA’s decision and Kennedy’s weak promise to review dispensing guidelines.
The [Ethics and Public Policy Center] EPPC’s finding suggest the amount of adverse effects suffered by women within 45 days of taking mifepristone is 22 times higher than what the FDA’s current label indicates. Sepsis, infection, and hemorrhaging are the main adverse effects mentioned in the study.
Yet the market has another easily available, and cheaper abortion drug that just about anyone can receive by mail from just about any pharmacy. It’s ironic how pro-abortion advocates like to say that mifepristone is as “safe as Tylenol” and now Tylenol is deemed unsafe for expectant mothers, while the drug to end a pregnancy is apparently okay despite promises for a complete review.
Over 60 percent of abortions are now chemical “plan B” type pills, according to the Guttmacher Institute, which is decidedly not pro-life. Regardless of state regulations and laws preventing mail-order abortions, these are not easily enforceable. So abortion will continue, just not in the cold hands of Planned Parenthood clinics. It will happen by mail, at home, alone and at risk.
Senator Josh Hawley said, in outrage, that he has “lost confidence” in the FDA’s leadership over this move. I think his outrage might be a bit late the game.
Congratulations to Republican voters and Senators who made this possible by allowing the president to appoint literally whoever he pleased to whatever position. The pro-life movement is no longer the apple of Trump’s eye.

I imagine that his wife - bless her heart - is a good bit more pissed off, as she argued (and lost) the mifepristone case before SCOTUS[1]. But "who could have known"?

Steve,
I agree with you and wish pro life was still Trump’s priority. But let’s be fair: The Democrat party is so far gone on pro abortion that it prefers infanticide to pro life instead. Kennedy is a life long Democrat who is pro abortion but has initiated many other pro life health reforms of a different type. He is only in the Trump administration because the Democrats kicked him to the curb and he helped broaden the new Republican Party. I understand that Racket News must frame all issues in an anti Trump box and I don’t agree with everything Trump does. But with everything he has on his plate, I’ll take him over any Socialist aligned with the anti God, anti life, anti health, anti traditional family coalition.
