I'll be brief; thank you David. Common sense matters.

Solid piece David.

Speaking of that arrest of that MI candidate, I'm thinking that these types of candidates are going to be a big headache to the GOP, especially when their nuttiness goes viral. We remember when bad candidates cost the GOP Senate control in 2010 and they blew winnable races in 2012 as well. But some of the one's now are winning nominations even more flawed than before. We could see another midterm where the GOP wins the House, but fails to win the Senate(I'm thinking Hershel Walker, in particular. That dude can't string together anything coherent). Some of them are running on the Big Lie, and they are going to get a rude awakening when they find out that it repels more voters than it attracts.

One huge problem the right has in regard to extremist violence comes from their embrace of conspiracy theories and anything else that allows them to believe their party is still the party of law and order. Any violence that looks like it's linked to right wing extremism is explained by calling it a false flag operation or saying it was Antifa posing as right wingers. The politicians don't do this so much (although some do), but knowing their voters believe these things allows them to avoid having to change their rhetoric or tactics.

There's reason to fear "crossing the tipping point into socialism/ communism/ authoritarianism/ despotism" and various other radicalisms. The current administration is proof. But as you have said, Republicans can't get their act together to stop it. Your point about strict adherence to Constitutional law is a good one except the intent and meaning have been perverted to by courts, elected officials and bureaucrats to reflect the political desires of those in charge at any given moment. And, even where the meaning clear, prosecutorial discretion is always an out.

I did not realize you think abortion is a right ("that’s what Republicans get for trying to take away a woman’s right to choose"). I think it's wrong, but it is a state matter if anything. The Supremes may rule that way. Most laws governing our day-to-day lives should be state laws. The Feds should stick to national defense, foreign affairs, true interstate matters and a few (very few) other common interests.
