Well said. It's a sad thing to witness as one after another falls. Todays kids are far less invested in music as anything other than background sound to TikTok clips. But that is a different discussion altogether. (P.S. Autotune is a tool of the devil)

I hate auto tune. Almost every modern pop artist uses it. I’d listen to Peter Frampton’s “Do You Feel Like I Do” (which I detest) on a loop before any of those auto tune pop songs.

That song was a harbinger of sorts. Vocoder, right? But Peter could play that guitar, so not a total right off. Todays engineering can make anyone sound good(ish) and does. All of the crooners you mention had talent, not electronics. Could be the subject of another exposition.

No, he uses a talkbox not a vocoder. If you're not familiar with the tech: it's effectively a speaker in a box, with a tube that projects the sound into one's mouth. You then manipulate the sound with your mouth/throat, which is picked up by microphone. You do not use your vocal chords at all.

Damn. Is nothing real anymore?

The talkbox is real in that the guitar sound somes out a tube and you manipulate the sound physically with mouth. A vocoder involves singing into a microphone and manipulating it's signal via a keyboard.

I suppose that's real in that musical skills are required. I flunked sixth grade music and was advised against wasting money on an instrument for high school band. I could read the music but could never really carry a tune. I believe my music nickname was laughingstock. I am better off listening and love the steel guitar artists at the Grand Ole Opry. It sounds almost like they can make it talk. Or is that a vocoder? Serious question.

Another Badfinger song that likely generates some royalties: "Without You", as covered by Harry Nilsson
