Your last paragraph says it all David. When a party, or an individual has no concerns about the quality of the character they elect, what are they saying about themselves? There are no longer any norms, everything is measured in wins and losses. There is no longer right or wrong, only were we able to kick the next guys ass.
What an incredibly horrible price to pay. Imagine a boxing match where one fighter stays within the rules and the other fighter keeps kicking you in the balls and all the ref does is clap for him...and then imagine half the crowd in the room cheers him on.
But alas, this isn't about sports metaphors. This is about a country where there are no values, no moral compass, nothing other than whether we beat the other side into oblivion. I used to read EE regularly. That is until he sold his soul for the almighty dollar. What makes it so distasteful is when one cloaks themself is the religious right and pretends, nothing to see here.
Acting as if what donald trump does is normal or even just okay because we are winning, is a sickness this country may never recover from. In my humble opinion, one hell of a price to pay.
