There's too much money tied up in AI investments right now for anyone to risk upsetting that apple cart. Marc Andreessen and David Horowitz (AI investors) are pouring huge amounts of money into pro-Trump groups and allies because they know that he can be bought and paid for to ignore this. (Kusher has his AI company now, for example.)
That said, the thing I keep reminding myself is that this isn't the final form of this technology. We'll have to wait for the founders to get bored and move on and let the Private Equity Boys move in. I'm not going to venture a guess as to whether that will be beneficial to humanity or not.
My recent experience arranging a routine HVAC service convinced me you are correct. I dialed the regular phone number and the female voice that answered sounded normal. I started to describe a few things I needed checked and she cut me off to explain that she was an automated service that only scheduled maintenance visits and I would have deal with the technician when he arrived. I sensed she would not stand for any back talk and settled for scheduling.
Do me, us all, a favor Steve; never write something this dark later in the day. My bad, i left it till just before i went to sleep. Look, it was my mistake, but your morning musings allow me a full day to let your thoughts percolate through and not cause me to toss and turn.
Commenters are right, as you are; this train has left the station and it ain't coming back. The big money players are in far too deep to play nice now. It was all compounded last night when i watched Sheridan's Lioness and the corrupt professor told his students in ten years, none of their college degrees will be relevant. I know, TV, but how close to the truth is it?
With each passing day, as the richest of the rich get wealthier and the rest of us struggle to get by, i ponder; how the hell did we get here? Easy, we elected an incompetent and totally corrupt boob as our president. No, it's not one man's fault alone, but the guardrails built over 250 years have been shattered. Norms are non-existent and the corruption he lives for becomes permissible behavior for politicians of all stripes.
AI will pose nightmares aplenty, the billionaires won't give two shits about the impact on or to the country or the world for that matter. Our government should hold them in check...that will happen when orange pigs fly.
Ok, Steve, you make great, uncomfortable points, as usual. Have you watched any of Peter Diamandis' Moonshots YouTube podcasts? He and his 3 podcaster mates are MIT grads. They have guests like Musk, Emad Mostaque, Ramez Naam, Dr. Fei-Fei Li & Dr. Eric Schmidt. It's a first-rate offering and well worth the time. The show tends toward optimism, but deals with all things AI even-handedly. While I agree with you on many points, no one will or can stop this. The money and power are building it and will not be deterred.

Great piece, brother. As always. I learned a lot.
