If we had better uniform options in 1963 when I was in basic training for ROTC students at Fort Benning, I was not aware of them. One June or July day I walked 20 miles across the post carrying a Browning automatic rifle and a backpack that probably weighed 10 to 20 pounds more than the BAR. I did develop a blister that was alleviated by two clean pair of socks. I was at least a year older than any other trainee in my platoon because I had been working every other academic quarter to pay my way through engineering school. I was still using those same boots when I entered active duty as a commissioned officer. They were the only uniform items I did not have to turn in before leaving Fort Benning. In those days, there was no need for running shoes on duty. The uniform of the day was usually fatigues and combat boots. If you ran on duty, it was in combat boots. If it was really hot, the fatigue pants were worn unbloused. Uniform details were posted on the bulletin board and reading it was mandatory.

I would like to thank your son for his service and you for his upbringing. Too many youngsters today would never consider joining the military. Less than 5% of USA citizens have any understanding or appreciation for the role of the military.

Pundits are having a field day after the week long fiasco and yours was another in a long line i have read David. Unlike some today, i like well written sentiments over memes and one-liners. However in this case you summed it all up in this concise verbiage: "fecal material floating in a punch bowl."

There is no shame any more in politics anymore, this is what "winning" looks like these days.
