He’ll just gaslight us, that is what he does. He’ll use words like “we aren’t paying” while unfreezing Iranian bank accounts, or there is “toll-free” passage through the Strait while allowing the Iranians to charge service fees to cross the strait.
I have no hope for an honest accounting of what was promised to the Iranians and I have 0 expectations of them making a single nuclear concession going forward. He’ll crow that they agreed not to make a nuclear weapon, except that was exactly their public posture before the war.
Missing context re the $1.7B: the pre-1979 government ordered a bunch of military equipment from the US and paid ~$400M. The money was placed in an interest-bearing account, and the equipment was never delivered due to the revolution
That's a fairly simple legal dispute that Iran would have easily won - eventually - and those funds would have been returned to them.
Using the return of those particular funds stopped that interest from accruing further, and of course bought the original JCPOA.
Now we're looking not just at $25B - which is 17x the JCPOA payment - but a reported $300B - 175x the JCPOA - and Iran having control of the strait in perpetuity, with a toll system in place.
