It doesn’t feel like the time to be minimizing his incredible response to almost being killed. No matter how much you prepare yourself for the idea of your death (personally I doubt Trump ever did this deep reckoning with his death that you imply) your nervous system selects a response in the moment—and his did. No matter how you may try to minimize it, he looked like a leader. And then to be blaming him for the deaths? My response to this article is that you might want to read the room. Wait a beat. In a week there will be tons of this.

It's funny how that wasn't the standard when it came to #MAGA and John McCain.

Who said Trump is responsible for the deaths? Not at all. But if someone pushed you out of the path of a bus targeting you and got run over, you’d feel a twinge of conscience. I hope the GOP feels it.

Upon first reading it sounded as if you were implying some kind of responsibility. But on second reading, I am not sure what your point was about the number of people who took bullets for him. Perhaps you were simply paying your respect.

I think getting shot at is not what qualifies one as a leader, nor whether that somehow counters any/all negatives of said person's desired political actions/policies.

...and?

Do we start addressing other political leaders that had attempts on their lives, like Mussolini in 1926 or George Wallace in 1972 - and whether those attempts somehow made their politics no longer reprehensible?

No. It’s just a pithy quote and defines Trump’s state of mind.

Saying that Republicans should feel a twinge of conscience is ridiculous. Anyone involved in creating and disseminating political rhetoric that is designed to stir up hyperbolic feelings of fear and hatred against a political candidate, or member of another political viewpoint, should feel much more than a twinge of conscience, they should be spending time asking how they can make amends with and entire nation of people that they have been purposely emotionally manipulating to create these situations. If anything, Republicans should feel a debt of gratitude to, and sadness for, these victims of the current government and media.

The true measure of the man, the myth and the legend will be on display this week in Wisconsin. Will he have had an epiphany? As his life was flashed in front of his eyes, will he embrace a kinder, more gentile nature? Will the better angels have squashed the anger and resentments he has spent years nurturing?

We'll see won't we? We'll all see.

He already posted a standard Trump message this morning. Nothing will change him.

“As we move forward in Uniting our Nation after the horrific events on Saturday, this dismissal of the Lawless Indictment in Florida should be just the first step, followed quickly by the dismissal of ALL the Witch Hunts — The January 6th Hoax in Washington, D.C., the Manhattan D.A.'s Zombie Case, the New York A.G. Scam, Fake Claims about a woman I never met (a decades old photo in a line with her then husband does not count), and the Georgia "Perfect" Phone Call charges.

Wow, the NEW and IMPROVED trump is awesome to behold. It must have just about killed trump to let whoever write the message that was released after the shooting. We know lard-ass didn't write it.

And, the horde of knuckle-draggers are all talking about the democrats fostering hatred. Spare me the nonsense and just accept the fact trump is simply devoid of any sense of humanity.

I think his first response after the shooting Saturday, when he paid condolences to the victims and thanked his secret service detail, will probably be the high water mark. And that actually was a very tasteful blurb.

I'm mystified as to how that statement is meant to help with "Uniting our Nation."

I wouldn’t put the Jan 6 people at anywhere near the same level as the victims from Saturday. The Jan 6 meatheads went there looking for trouble, and big surprise they found some. It’s just the choices and consequences chapter of the adulting handbook played out.

Those 3 victims Saturday weren’t looking for any trouble, which to me makes it far more tragic. And if the story has been embellished a bit for dramatic effect….gosh I wouldn’t begrudge any of them any of it.
