It's coming. The idiots will force the governments hand and then bitch about it. The longer we allow this to go on the greater to likelihood of a variant that gets around the vaccine. And then things will get so much worse.
You may be right but where does the government stop? Gradual erosion of individual rights is real. When whoever was last elected gets to determine what the current emergency is, anything goes. There are courts but if they consistently support those elected, there are no longer checks and balances. If they don't the courts are in charge and elections are useless.
We’ve seen this before. There were emergency orders in WWI, the 1918 pandemic, and WWII. The common denominator is that they all went away when the emergency ended.
Ironically, it was 45 who was abusing emergency orders to bypass Congress, not Fauci or the governors.
1918 was a long time ago when some politicians still had integrity. WWII emergency orders had the backing of the War Powers Act but FDR was dead wrong in ordering American of Japanese descent relocated.
Trump issued one emergency order, still standing, that funded states fighting Covid and relaxing some medical standards to enhance diagnosis and treatment of Covid. He issued another emergency order to divert military funding to securing the southern border. A lot of us wish it were still in place. His other emergency orders concerned foreign sanctions.
So it is perfectly rational to support pandemic mitigation but strictly scrutinize the exercise of powers by the state, particularly on emergency matters.
The digital health records passport is in my opinion, the best choice we have. It will make sure that businesses and organizations don’t unduly punish the responsible, while holding the irresponsible accountable for their actions. Mandatory vaccinations in a nanny-state fashion, would IMO let too many people off the hook in enjoying life after having acted irresponsibly all along. Instead, having businesses and the government ensure that the purposefully unvaccinated not being able to: patronize private businesses, get hired by those requiring vaccinations, go to a university or school requiring vax, stay at a hotel, higher insurance premiums for health, or get on an airplane to travel, would really make them pay a price for their not so stellar choices. Time to squeeze that pocketbook hard.
I sympathize with your points Curtis. While I’ve supported pandemic mitigation measures over the part year, including masking requirements and social distancing, I’ve also viewed any such exercise of state power justified under the pretext of an emergency, with an appropriate level of skepticism. Due to the fallible nature of man, unnecessary encroachments of rights beyond what is necessary and proper to deal with emergencies in an even handed way, do happen and have occurred in the past.
Really good perspectives from you and Steve regarding where the pandemic is at. Very thought provoking as always.
This stinks to have to be quarantined likely because of someone who made the decision not to get vaxxed, and you and your family have to pay the consequences for it. As you mentioned in this column, we really need enact some common sense policies to ensure that responsible people like you and your family, and everyone else here at the Racket, aren’t unduly forced to suffer for the bad choices of others.
In the meantime David, I wish a full and speedy recovery for your wife from Covid-19. I’ll be keeping you and your family in my prayers.
CA had setup a site where you can access your vax record (with a QR code for health app scanning), and recently added support for a GPay card. Instant access whenever needed!
I live in a bubble. My life is easy compared to most with kids and jobs and lives that force them to be exposed to all of what is going on in the real world. I don't want to be judgmental, especially based on how i live. Masks, vaccines, your choice.
When i read the articles written by both you and Steve regarding Covid19 this week, it was heart-breaking. Both of you have been proponents of caution and care from nearly the beginning. If you guys and your families have gotten it, is there any hope?
Of course the answer is yes, but the challenges for all of you living in the real world and especially in the red states where the push back on vaccinations is so strong has to be frustrating. As much as i want to ignore it all, everyone has been forced to adjust. Some have sacrificed way more than others.
I used to work out six days a week; i haven't been in a gym in a year and half. I won't go back any time soon. Living in a senior community with lots of old people who are avid trump lovers i won't/don't trust them to do the right thing. It's a tiny price to pay compared to most.
All of which leads me to the bottom line, get vaccinated. You guys are living proof, while the vaccines are infallible they can keep you from the ugliest of outcomes. We'll never vaccinate everyone; there is no reason on God's green earth why we can't reach herd immunity and slow the spread.
While i'm not a religious guy, i will pray you and your families get through this safely and your lives someday can get back to normal.
You sound like my wife who still would not leave the house if she weren't trying to find a wardrobe for our granddaughter's wedding. She's 78 and I'm a few years older and we've both been vaccinated. I work out an play golf several days a week in very red northeast Georgia. Why the social isolation if you've been vaccinated?
