I think Trump is inevitably trying to turn attention back upon himself. There's no principle involved here. If there was he would have involved himself from the process at the beginning. It's a wrestle for control of the GOP with McConnell, and no matter what the Senate republicans do Trump will attack them in order to diminish them and elevate himself.
The good news is that the GOP can expect four more years of this.
