Trump is experiencing some good news, but there are caveats. The stock market is up, but so is inflation while the economy contracted in the first quarter. Trump got a narrow win at SCOTUS but his birthright citizenship rewrite still won’t survive. ICE and deportation are increasingly unpopular.

MAGA is about to experience the curse of getting what it asked for, but they will also get the consequences. I still say blowback is coming.

Turning bad ideas into real policy isn’t necessarily a long term win.

"By the way, and related, this is one of the reasons I think Substack is important. I realize that you, reading this, are 'my' readers, but you’re really Substack users. Your eyeballs are theirs, and I’m just supplying them with content. The horde votes with its eyes, so I’m grateful to you all for reading The Racket News™ instead of all the other things you could be reading on this site."

I'm an outlier here, but my eyes are "yours" more than Substack's.

If for some reason, you ever decide to leave this place, I've had a ton of good experiences with Ghost, a newsletter platform that you can host yourself:

https://ghost.org/

I don't see any reason for you to depart, but don't feel like you're locked in. It's pretty simple to migrate your audience over, at the expense of a nominal fee for Mailgun to send out your e-mails reliably.

Proud to be a dissident since June 2015. Yay, gas is down and eggs are cheaper. But lets close our eyes and ears to the horrid truths of what they are doing here in a country we call home and globally as well. I am ashamed of our elected representatives that fear Trump and not the actual voters. It would take all day to list the things they are doing to hurt us and people abroad. I won’t even try. But I won’t close my eyes and ears and I will never forget!

Gas is actually more expensive than on inauguration day: average retail price on Jan 20 2025 was 3.229, currently it's at 3.338.

From Bing search:

$3.49 per gallon

The national average price of gasoline on July 4 is expected to be $3.49 per gallon, the lowest holiday price since 20211. This is just a penny lower than the price a year ago and over $1.30 below what motorists paid over the holiday in 20222. In Georgia, the average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $2.963.

$2.79 here in Miami today. And it’s been falling as fast as it rose at the start of Israel’s war with Iran.

But many, many other things are going up. For us it’s coffee. They messed with coffee and that is a cardinal sin!

Thanks for differentiating between haters and dissenters. It’s difficult and sometimes the line between the two is very fine. Most dissenters refrain from commenting at all unless there are negative points to be made. Haters take every opportunity to attack all speech, policies and actions – even to the point of making crap up and trying to turn positives into negatives.

I think you are a reliable dissenter because of the way you wrote this post and earlier posts, including the recent one where you discussed concerns, unknowns and risks involved in attacking Iran’s nuclear program.

Contrast that with the haters’ take on the same story. Their reporting leans toward how the Grand Ayatollah cleverly bested the Great Satan Trump by destroying 14 of his bunker busters and 30 of his submarine launched missiles while mercifully sparing his military disciples.

I feel like I see a lot of left-wing commentary these days - where did you see the story about the Iranians besting Trump?

Drat. I was looking for some progressive lunacy to balance out all the #MAGA lunacy that's being piped my way through a fire hose.

I don't want to go too "native" over here on my perch waiting for the popular front to catch up. ;-)

Oh well, there is plenty of ammunition for Trump critics. Unfortunately, most of it comes from all-consumed haters instead of balanced dissenters such as Steve.
