You can add Midway to the list. There were several points in that battle in which things could have easily gone the other way. The definitive account is called “Miracle at Midway” for a reason.
Well said, Steve. Trump's reference to the communism boogeyman man has stood out to me and I find it ironic that he is attempting to resurrect that fear when, as The Cato Institute pointed out in a December 2025 publication, "the administration has unilaterally engineered a series of deals that give the federal government ownership stakes in a portfolio of private companies.
Here’s a quick recap:
June: Trump issues an executive order allowing Japan’s Nippon Steel to purchase U.S. Steel in exchange for a “golden share,” giving the president extensive control over U.S. Steel’s operations.
July: The government becomes the largest shareholder in MP Materials, a company that produces rare earth metals.
August: The administration announces that the government is taking a 10 percent equity stake in Intel, becoming the storied American semiconductor company’s largest single shareholder.
September: An equity deal is reached with Lithium America, including a share of its joint venture with General Motors on the Thacker Pass lithium project in Nevada.
October: The U.S. acquires stakes in Canadian-based Trilogy Metals, inserting the government into a joint venture with Australia’s South32 to develop the Ambler mining district in Alaska.
October: A deal is reached with the Canadian owners of Westinghouse to finance nuclear reactors in exchange for the government receiving a share of future profits, with an option to require an initial public offering of Westinghouse and convert the profit share into a 20 percent ownership stake.
November: The U.S. acquires stakes in rare-earth magnet manufacturer Vulcan Elements, alongside a complementary agreement with rare-earth processor ReElement Technologies that includes warrants giving the government the right to buy stock later.
Last week, the White House announced a preliminary agreement to acquire a stake in xLight, a startup developing technology to enhance extreme ultraviolet lithography machines used in the manufacture of advanced semiconductor chips.
Trump administration officials have made it clear that more deals are forthcoming. Potential targets include defense contractors, quantum-computing companies, and, according to Reuters, “deals across up to 30 industries, involving dozens of companies deemed critical to national or economic security
It's definitely not free market capitalism, with the gov't choosing winners and losers.
Makes me wonder if there are some Equal Protection lawsuits brewing from the competitors who were NOT chosen to receive preferential treatment from Uncle Sam.
Sounds like our government will profit economically by business deals ensuring our country and others get resources they really need with future guarantees for our government to get shares in the profits.
It also gives the gov't a strong incentive to put its thumb on the scale for the companies it's also a shareholder in, and to use gov't resources to prop them up when they should otherwise fail.
It also creates an ENORMOUS channel and incentives for Banana Republic corruption to reward politicians who get their companies included in the "United States Mutual Fund". Given that SCOTUS treats the Constitution's Emoluments Clause as a dead letter and an executive branch unwilling to enforce anti-corruption measures, we might as well start auctioning off the country to the richest bidders and embrace our new dystopian cyberpunk reality.
Or we could just continue to fund NGO’s , ( Communist and opposing populations to our government) to continue looting the treasury, create violent anarchy, steal from Medicare, etc. and overthrow POTUS and America. Let’s face it: Humanity is deeply depraved.
The communist threat might have been driven undercover three decades ago but it was not foiled. We now have a communist mayor in NYC where the majority of voters in a city of 8.5 million people either voted for the communist or did not care enough to vote otherwise. We will have at least three communists in the next Congress of the USA.
The whining about the USA government taking steps to assure availability of crucial industries and raw materials is just one more symptom of a nation that has become too lazy to take the initiatives necessary to remain independent.
I follow Mamdani over on Bluesky and he's 1000% more Leslie Knope[1] than Vladimir Lenin.
If anything to the left of drowning the baby of gov't in the bathwater is communist, then you lost that battle decades ago, including with the current President.
The stated goal of the DSA is communism. Their platform includes worker and governmental control of all important institutions and industries. I haven't lost but future generations will.
Fortunately, the rest of the country gets a voice in what happens next.
That is, if self-described conservatives will stop doing crap that continues to concentrate power in Washington, and in the office of the President, in particular.
We can elect Presidents every four years and remove from office any who are sufficiently unpopular at any time. The citizens are in charge even when they are wrong, but they vote partisanly. That's why a representative republic is the best form of government and why we should hope for success rather than failure of the executive branch. The legislative branch consists of permanently entrenched schmoozers.
And the DSA's primary target is to defeat Democrats, making their success highly unlikely.
What would help a great deal - if you actually care about it - is to be calling your representative and Senators about Trump's Communist actions, and to stop calling welfare socialism or Communism (of which it is neither). Decades of attacking welfare as either ideology just makes for people that think welfare is needed to associate it as being said ideologies - which breeds more support for them.
The DSA campaigns not necessarily against democrats but in democrat districts with the most communistic (and deadbeat) leaning constituents that they are most likely to win.
Welfare is largely socialistic because it's free and has no real challenges as to need. It is mostly an opportunity for fraud where it can buy votes for blue state politicians. Welfare, to a large degree, results from a lack of incentive to find work. The extent of fraud is just beginning to be known.
They 100% campaign against Democrats, and are trying to usurp the party like MAGA did the GOP - 'cause they know they can't win as their own party. They only succeed in safe seats, typically speaking - you don't see them winning a competitive general race anywhere..
But that's because y'all have spent decades equating welfare with socialism/Communistm.
Welfare is not socialism because it does not involve the state controlling the means of production. Make arguments against it all you like - just keep it based in reality, like the latter part of your last comment. That's an actual argument!
Welfare: "to each according to his needs.” Or whatever he says his needs are. Some is justified. Some is fraudulent. Daycare fraud. Autism fraud. SNAP fraud. Covid payroll assistance fraud.
"Intentional fraud is harder to measure, and the numbers are strikingly larger once you try. The GAO used a simulation model drawing on investigative data, Inspector General reports, and confirmed fraud filings from FY 2018 through FY 2022 to estimate that the federal government loses between $233 billion and $521 billion annually to fraud. That range represents 3% to 7% of average annual federal spending. The enormous spread between the low and high ends reflects genuine uncertainty: much fraud goes undetected, and the model accounts for varying assumptions about how much slips through."
Curtis; i know you are smarter than that but being trapped in the trump crap pile of thought, communist is the lamest of lame. Come on bro, you're better than that...or maybe not.
Spoken as a true man of the people who has previously commented that he fought the progressive battle for 30 years. According to at least one member of the DSA policy committee, their goal is communism.
I loved this article you wrote in honor of our country’s 250th birthday Steve. Already, it has broken a record for how long established republics have lasted compared to other republics. It is also always refreshing to see a man of faith give God the glory for what he has wrought. Anyone who has studied primary sources of the colonialists, the founders, the history and is not in denial, knows that our motto, “ In God we trust,” is the reason we were formed and blessed among nations.
San Marino is a city with population of 34,000 landlocked inside the country of Italy. They allow Italians with valid passports to enter their borders. So, even those who live in Italy must show ID to enter its border. The U.S. has 340.6 million people. The government structures are completely different. The demographics are native peoples and Italians with similar language and culture. No wonder they have http://lasted.So yes, your pint is made ( a technicality) but I don’t think San Marino is really a valid comparison. Most of the world doesn’t even know San Marino exists. One more thing: I no longer consult WIKI except on absolutely non disputable questions such as “ On what continent is ( fill in the blank with a country) since anyone who is serious knows it has lost all credibility.
What are the parameters of the record that you cited in your original post? I strongly suspect that you just made something up, but would love for you to prove me wrong on that front.
I'm no constitutional scholar Patricia, i'm not even sure i trust AI that much; but here's what the AI overview said: "The phrase "In God We Trust" does not appear in the United States Constitution. While the Constitution establishes a secular government with no official religion, the phrase itself was later adopted as the national motto in 1956,"
Digging a little deeper: "The Constitution's Stance
No Mention: The Constitution contains no references to God, Jesus, or any supreme being.
Article VI: Prohibits any religious test for holding public office.
First Amendment: The Establishment Clause prevents the government from establishing a national religion, while the Free Exercise Clause guarantees citizens the right to practice their faith freely."
I only take exception in that while Steve uses religion often in his articles, his literary association is usually not to prove a point, but to make a point. I thought this article did that nicely.
It's kind of like trump's mangled rendering of our Declaration of Independence last night: "And as our Declaration of Independence tells us, we are all made in the image of one Almighty God. And a Communist will never say that. That's for sure."
Not to be unkind, but just saying stuff that isn't true may work for trump, but honestly it is getting really tiring for those of us who think the truth matters.

Mike Slater’s podcast, “ Politics by Faith” might also inform your knowledge about the beliefs, practice and formulation of our founding documents and government. They were mostly Christians. The Bible, not just the Enlightenment, heavily influenced their thinking and ideas about governance. Much of this factual information has been revised and deliberately suppressed.

Communism? Fascism? Definitely on the far end of both political spectrums.
It's definitely not free market capitalism, with the gov't choosing winners and losers.
Makes me wonder if there are some Equal Protection lawsuits brewing from the competitors who were NOT chosen to receive preferential treatment from Uncle Sam.
Brilliantly said. And so nice to read a voice who puts God in the proper perspective!!

Which record?
San Marino is still ahead of us by over 1,400 years (301 AD vs. 1776 AD).[1]

I just want to know what record you had in mind.
What are the parameters of the record that you cited in your original post? I strongly suspect that you just made something up, but would love for you to prove me wrong on that front.
Idk about that. I was referring to the last 250 years. I should have clarified.
San Marino has been a republic during the last 250 years.
What particular records did you have in mind?

To Chris J. Karr, Author: from Patricia Gauthier, Author
I read it but don’t remember where. Could have been the Epoch Times. I don’t make stuff up Chris. I am genuine.
I'll hold off on my judgement that you're making things up then.
That said, if/when you do see it again, please reply here and I'd love to check it out.

Our motto was "E Pluribus Unum", and rightly it should still be so.
Facts don't seem.k ev in your side when you actually look at what they said, or at what they put into our founding documents.
And on that note, E Plurinus Unum was maligned by the lunies who hate our country and worship multiculturalism and divided us into tribes
It’s on our dollar bill which came later
I did not say it was in our founding documents.
You'd think it would be if they wanted it to be.
In fact they were opposed to doing so, and made many arguments of why they should not.
I recommend you read, “ Reading the Bible With the Founding Fathers” by Daniel Dreisbach to learn how much the Bible influenced the writing of our founding documents. The founders were so immersed in it they simply infused it into all their conversations, letters, political pamphlets and yes, our founding documents. They did not have to quote the reference chapters and verses as we do today because all the people in the colonies ( the whole culture) were so familiar with the Bible they recognized it. The Bible shaped their beliefs as much as the ideas of the Enlightenment, if not more.
Sure, other than any non-Christians that were there and didn't care about said chapters/verses.
Again, there's a reason they intentionally left out a religious basis for our nation. Deal with it.
