Once upon a time, there was a sane, competent guy that beat liberal Democrat Russ Feingold in 2010 and was elected for the first time. While I'm not gung-ho about term limits, Ron Johnson would be a perfect poster child for term limits advocates wanting a 2 term limit for Senators. He, like other GOP members of Congress today, were different animals back then.
Given that one of the evergreen complaints among conservatives is how DC takes their hometown conservative heroes and turns them into slaves of the "Georgetown Cocktail Party Circuit", you could sell term limits as a limiter for that drift.
The jury is still out for me on term limits for legislators - my main concern is that you empower lobbyists at the expense of a bunch of green Congressmen and Senators who have their hands full learning the ropes - but Ron Jon is a solid argument for them.
Green, unintelligent and no integrity are risks we have to deal with as voters. Right now, no integrity appears to be the general rule. I'll take my chances with term limits.
I would love to see term limits for all elective offices. Career politicians are destroying the USA. Term limits would be the ultimate "move up or move out" policy although, theoretically, some could move down to continue to be parasites on the taxpayers.
I think Joe Biden and the Democrats would benefit from reading your column here David, in addition to Republicans in Congress. Someone needs to drill it into their thick heads and get them to realize how bad things could've gotten. Maybe that is what they need to stop the partisan posturing and get the ball rolling on reforming the Electoral Count Act. At least we will be able to thwart potential alternate histories in future election years.
That Ron Johnson quote is something else.
Jeebus.
"Senator, let me introduce you to polio, tuberculosis, pertussis..."
