There’s a subtle little subplot going on in the election vibe about who’s a good Jew, and who’s a crappy Jew. Donald Trump got on Sid Rosenberg’s radio show in New York and riffed with him over how Vice President Kamala Harris “dislikes Jewish people and Israel even more than Biden did.”
Rosenberg: “He’s Jewish like Bernie Sanders is Jewish. Are you kidding me?”
“Yeah,” Trump said.
“He’s a crappy Jew,” Rosenberg said, continuing.
“Yeah,” Trump said again.
Rosenberg went on, saying of Emhoff, “He’s a horrible Jew.”
Now, as far as I know, Doug Emhoff, Harris’ husband, has said nothing publicly about the war in Gaza, or Hamas, or Israel, or Jewishness. He’s been pretty silent on this stuff. I have no idea what his opinion is, at least from any firsthand sources. I have to admit I didn’t search for it, even in Google.
And you know why? I don’t care.
There’s so much wrong with this “crappy Jew” line of thinking that it’s hard to know where to begin without popping veins in my head.
First, on what do you base this judgement? Observance? So you’re telling me a shock jock in New York, Rosenberg—the guy who replaced Don freaking Imus—is some rabbi who can proclaim who is a good Jew and who is a crappy Jew?
Or do you base “good Jew” on politics, as in support for Israel—meaning whatever the Israeli government happens to be doing at any time. Listen, Israelis can’t agree on whether their own prime minister is a saint or a devil. They can’t keep a government together except for existential reasons like fighting Hamas—and even then they can’t agree on how to do it. How are American Jews to be judged?
Worse, this argument sets up the truth of anti-semitic tropes like “dual loyalty” of Jews. If the measure of a “good Jew” is support for Israeli, then how can any American Jew be measured on loyalty or patriotism to the American way of government and social peace? If a “crappy Jew” takes Hamas’ side, then the Hamas-loving idiots are right conflating Jewishness with the hate objects of their anti-colonial anti-zionist death cult.
And it’s not only left-wing Jew haters who are enabled by the “good Jew” - “crappy Jew” arguments. Donald Trump has his own orbit of virulent Jew haters like Nick Fuentes, who had dinner with Trump at Mar a Lago, and Candice Owens, who sharply split with Ben Shapiro.
Let’s be crystal clear on this. People who love Hamas aren’t crappy-this or crappy-that. They are crappy people, period. If they happen to be Jewish, that doesn’t absolve them of crappiness, but don’t drag Jewishness into it.
That makes Emhoff’s daughter, Ella, who is Harris’ stepdaughter, a borderline crappy person, or at least “crappy curious.” The NY Post describes Ella as “Hamas-curious”because she raised money for UNRWA, the agency embedded in Gaza to provide and and comfort to Hamas. At least a dozen UNRWA workers actively participated in the October 7th slaughter, according to U.N. Watch.
Having a borderline-crappy daughter does not make one a crappy Jew, nor does it make one’s spouse a Jew hater. Yes, it’s true that Harris is taking a firmer line with Prime Minister Netanyahu. But that’s election politics, and Netanyahu, while he acts offended, couldn’t care less about it, as long as he gets what he wants from our Congress.
Voting for Democrats, or Republicans, does not make a Jew good or crappy. Trump told Rosenberg that any Jewish voters who back a Democrat “should have their head examined,” and “if you’re Jewish, if you vote for a Democrat, you’re a fool, an absolute fool. They have let Jewish people down since Obama at a level that nobody could believe.”
Even if we agree that Obama was no friend of the Likud Party in Israel, and was way too friendly with Hamas in Gaza—Obama used Gaza-based call centers in his election campaign—that doesn’t define being a fool. Democrats have done a lot to enable Iran’s nuclear ambitions, but many claim that the JCPOA would have worked had Trump not torn it up. These are debatable points. Being a good or crappy Jew has nothing to do with them.
It doesn’t seem to have hampered Israel’s ability to operate in Iran seemingly unimpeded, either. Israel just (excuse me: “hooray!”) apparently eliminated Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. There’s a guy who needed to die. The political leader of Hamas lived in luxury, just miles from 11,000 U.S. troops in Doha, Qatar, protected by the Qatari sheiks.
Then Haniyeh made a mistake by going to Tehran, and was killed. (It’s interesting how some in the media conveniently forget who fired a missile that killed 12 Druze Israeli children playing soccer—the missile just fired itself—but are quick to blame Israel for killing Haniyeh, though Israel has remained officially mum on the subject.)
The biggest argument isn’t over who is a “crappy Jew.” Because you know who doesn’t care if you’re a good Jew or not? Hamas, and their crazy, idiotic, young, dumb supporters on U.S. campuses. Hamas killed Jews on October 7th because they were Jews.
You know who else didn’t care if a Jew was good or crappy? Actual Nazis. Jewishness was not defined politically. It was defined racially. Bernie Sanders, Doug Emhoff, Jeffrey Epstein, Jared Kushner, Sid Rosenberg, they all would have died in the gas chambers and burned in the ovens together.
There’s a reason Israel exists. There’s a reason we must never forget the Holocaust. And any effort to paint Jews in one color or another only helps those who would paint them with yellow stars.
Remember that when you hear gentile politicians engage on the subject, and, like me, try not to pop a head vein.

Let me put this out there. I’m happy that there are Jews in both the Democratic and Republican parties. That’s balance. Jews have a variety of political beliefs. If any party decides to “capture” all the Jews, leaving the other with none, that itself if a failure since it’s almost certain the party without Jews would succumb to antisemitism. Let Jews just be people.
100% Agree Steve
