Now, before everyone takes side in the Red Rover game here, know that I will be responding to David's take. All that glitters is not gold.

I think the GOP is unsalvageable, and conservatives need a new party.

A note on the size of government angle: too often the idea of "limited government" focuses on size and not the performance efficiency. Having an efficient government should be the goal: if that means more resources are needed (for example, expanding funding for the immigration system or the IRS) then so be it.

With tropical storm Helene rapidly approaching the US shore, you missed trump's greatest attribute David. Only one man (I ALONE) has had the power to redirect a storm of such sheer and unimaginable magnitude with the mere flick of a black sharpie.

It might just be his finest moment as president.

This raises an interesting thought: Trump floated nuking a hurricane during his first term, and was assumedly told not to do so by "the adults in the room". What's the likelihood that in a second Trump term he may think the same thing and not be guided away from that course of action?

It's easy to joke about trump, but in reality there would be nothing funny about a second term. The crazies he would have alongside him would cause havoc across the board and there would be no restraints. NONE.

I don't think David Thornton really knows what the term conservative means, especially if he puts people like Mitch McConnell and Liz Cheney under that umbrella.

Individualism, traditionalism and limited federal governmental power.

How is any of that advanced by Trumpism or the current GOP?

I think you’ve underscored my point.

I didn't say it was. I'm not a Trump supporter, but I'm certainly not a RINO supporter, or conservative in name only supporter either.

You know, traditionalism is in many ways antithetical to classical liberalism which is the basis of the American system of government and ultimately what American conservatism is conserving.

So perhaps a better question: what does the term "conservative" mean in the American context?

When Cheney is supporting the democrats that should tell you something. Along with the democrats being proud that he is. What is fighting them and their kind is called populism. Conservative and liberal have joined forces to fight democracy and the general public. The elites will use whoever helps them continue their agenda to gain power and money basically through war.

More like the middle choosing between democrat or demagogue for president. C- candidate vs. F. Your perspective will determine which grade applies. My father would have agreed with your power, money and war sentiment. I will error on standing against our adversaries and with our Allie’s to prevent war.

I bet you believe that Komrade Kamala will be a great president just like Pinocchio 🤥 Joe Biden. If you believe that the dynamic duo are what’s best for the USA, then you go with that. If you believe that we are better off economically and nationally secure than four years ago be careful what you wish for. And hopefully it never becomes true.

You miss the point of the article. The point is that the conservative cause, and the Republican Party, would emerge stronger during a Harris administration. This has little to do with how effective or competent a president Kamala Harris might be. It has to do with GOP and conservative priorities.
