No matter what you think of former President Trump’s performance in office, or MAGA, or the Democrats’ agenda for radical transformation of America, you cannot fail to pay attention to the January 6th Select Committee’s presentation tonight.
Watch this video.
The mob that assaulted the Capitol on January 6th was:
Violent;
Summoned by Trump’s “will be wild” tweet;
Shepherded by a seditious posse of Proud Boys who were fully armed and ready for violence;
Relentless in pursuit of reaching Vice President Pence and Congress;
Focused on keeping Trump in office regardless of the consequences
Prior to January 6th, President Trump was:
Open to any strategy, legal or not, to maintain his position in office;
Surrounding himself with those who fed his narcissistic dreams of power;
Deaf to voices of caution or reason;
Determined to push his plan to the bitter end;
Callous and aloof at the fate of anyone whose lives were endangered on January 6th—both law enforcement, who worked for him, and citizens who pledged their allegiance to him above the Constitutional duty of Congress.
Were this kind of testimony presented to a jury in a court of law in a criminal trial, the defense would be very challenged to counter the veracity of such an overwhelming variety and quantity of visual and audio evidence, direct and depositional testimony, and circumstantial evidence of criminal intent.
The only way to watch this and not care or seek to minimize it is to become a participant in the plot to overthrow the peaceful transfer of power in the world’s most stable democratically elected republic.
It takes an immense act of will to look at the evidence, hear the testimony, and watch the public display, yet believe Trump and those he duped were acting in the best interests and welfare of the United States.
The fact that the Senate failed to convict Trump on the heels of this event is bewildering and, frankly, dangerous to me. Any less merciful country and government in power in any other nation would declare the entire Republican Party an enemy of the state and ban it (like President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did with the pro-Russia parties in Ukraine). Any lesser nation would declare anyone who pledged their honor on Trump’s actions, and the man himself, a traitor. Fortunately, the United States does not operate this way.
I believe a show trial is the wrong way to persuade the nation that the Big Lie, and Trump’s actions, were seditious and illegal. But this wasn’t a show trial—at least not the first hour. It was a wake-up call and needed to be seen by every citizen of the United States.
Once seen, you all have a decision to make. But you can no longer sit on the fence. A decision—a side—is demanded. You must care about January 6th in the light of what was seen tonight. The question is: which side are you on?
Decided Trump acted counter the public good on that January 6’th. And that states it as mildly as possible. Would like to hear testimony on the details of how it was able to happen and how the Capitol was so unprepared and vulnerable. Hope the public portion answers our questions as citizens.
Agree with every point you made Steve.
