Because of the Delta variant, and the fact that we still have significant amount of vaccine holdouts, I've started to mask again when going to public establishments, with the exception of the gym when I'm directly using the cardio and weight machines. I'm glad that I'm vaccinated to where the chances of me getting seriously ill is very small, but I've been doing such out of an abundance of caution. I've also postponed my overseas vacation, and am waiting and seeing what the circumstances are over there. I also avoid crowds, and still use the sanitizer, and frequent hand washing.
I think that what the public needs to know, is that while nothing provides 100 percent efficacy, the lack of perfect protection is not a valid argument that a vaccine, mask, or any other means of protection is ineffective. Many of the anti-vaxxers such as Alex Berenson, Candace Owens, Tucker Carlson, and others of their ilk base their arguments on the lack of perfect efficacy. If these anti-vaxxers were intellectually consistent, they should stop driving/riding in cars, public transportation, and getting on an airplane. None of them provide a safety efficacy level of 100 percent, but they are extremely safe. I use these points when I talk to friends and acquaintances of mine who are vax-hesitant. So far, several of them have chosen to get vaxxed, which is heartening to see.
While I'm not a pilot, I remember hearing about that swiss cheese model when I worked for a commercial jet manufacturer years ago. It makes a lot of sense as how you as a pilot David, applied it to vaccination. Also from a hardware/software perspective, adding different layers(such as back ups(multiple actuators and controls that operate the same fight control surfaces, backup computers and generators/batteries, as well as multiple hydraulic systems and fuses, and the Ram Air Turbines that many large commercial jets have) and features in a jetliner, might not be constantly used in a routine flight, or by themselves be that significant of a safety feature. But combined together, they significant boost redundancy and add a lot to the factor of safety(FoS).
Very well put David. I like how you make your points from a premise of good faith, with genuine concern for those not vaxxed, as opposed to ridicule and disdain. I'm going to be sharing your article with many of my vax-hesitant friends and acquaintances.
I've been masking again inside stores and when picking up food from restaurants as well. Better safe than sorry, considering we can't get the 3.5 and 1.5 year olds vaccinated yet.
Do you have children? If yes, did you vaccinate them for all the regular stuff?
And you're just plain wrong. Kids can and do die from COVID, and why would I want them to deal with possible long-term complications of long COVID? Perhaps you need to review your risk analysis, Larry - you seem to be leaving some risks off the table.
I hear ya completely. We can thank the anti-vaxxers for ruining it for all of us who have chosen to be good citizens and have followed all the rules. I'm not sure how things will pan out in the weeks and months ahead, but I'm thinking that a possible 3rd dose Covid-19 booster shot might be something I'll be considering sometime down the road.
Risk analysis. this is what responsible people do when faced with life and death decisions. Democrats don't understand this when considering the pandemic, they just see an opportunity to maintain and gain power. Price is not important, it is all about the power. The left will fight any success against this pandemic and will never let it go because they have seen some gains as a result of it. I think that the majority of American Patriots will see past this and move on without them. The New Republican party will lead the way past the lefts assault on the American Way.
As a resident of Chicago with a Democratic mayor who made the call to open up the city ahead of schedule, is she in that bin? How about the Democratic governor of Illinois, under whom the state superintendent has declared that schools will revert back to full-attendance for the 2021-2022 school year?
I'm seeing plenty of Democrats making the calls that get us back to pre-COVID normals, so I'm wondering who specifically you have in mind is attempting to hoard power under the COVID umbrella. Can you cite specific Democrats you have in mind, how they are "fighting any success", and the power that they are trying to keep in the process?
Thanks for highlighting specific Democrats. Some notes:
1. On Pritzker's comments: Those were made in response to a question of what's going on over the border in Missouri (specifically St. Louis) and the COVID flare-up happening there:
"The governor said he is currently most concerned about rising rates of COVID-19 infection and hospitalization in Illinois counties next to Missouri."
"'Missouri is…the worst state in the nation right now,' Pritzker said. 'And it's right on our border. And (COVID-19) is pouring over, unfortunately, across the border into Metro East and southern Illinois.'"
"Some Republican governors in states such as Florida have explicitly ruled out another round of pandemic-related shutdowns. Pritzker said he will not do that."
(Earlier in the article:) "Pritzker insists Illinois, especially the Chicago area, is still a long way from a new round of shutdowns. If it happens however, Pritzker says it wouldn't be as tilted as it was last year in favor of big box stores, as long as they had a corner devoted to selling groceries."[1]
What you see as a power-grab here, seems like a governor opining on the use of his regular police and health powers.
2. On Newsom - the link you referenced was a month old, but I can't find any newer evidence that the status quo changed, so he seems like a legit member of the COVID Power Grabber Club.
3. Phil Murphy ended the state of emergency in NJ on July 4th[2]. Further progress on COVID in NJ revoked any remaining pandemic special powers weeks later. What you referenced was speculation from one of his political foes, so until we see Murphy try to regain his pandemic powers, he's in the "reasonable" bin with Pritzker.
4. Lamont let 27 emergency power orders expire, while retaining 8[3]. I think reasonable people can differ on whether this is an overreach (distributing federal funds, emergency purchasing of goods & services) or needed to respond to the remaining pandemic in CT. (I'm probably more on the overreach side with the two highlighted powers, personally - but I'm not sure how responsive the CT legislature can be allocating funds, which may be a reasonable justification.)
As for Chuck and Nancy, I don't think anyone's arguing that our COVID spending has been responsible. However, how is what they are doing any different than what transpired under the $2.3 trillion bill that Trump campaigned against, then signed?
We'll have to see how things go in California. I assume Newsom wants to not have to declare any new measures/closures while facing down a recall, but then again: 1/8th the population and LA County is having issues with Delta. I'll hold-off on calling anybody a power grabber until a time when said powers are definitely not needed.
And of course: the Assembly/Senate could remove those powers if needed.

Why would anyone vaccinate 3 year old kids. That is insane. They have nothing to worry about with this virus.

Or you know: many aren't doing proper risk analysis on the non-death issues of long COVID, possibilities for mutations, etc....
