Military and police dogs can be terrifying. I once accompanied the security NCO on an evaluation of the dogs used for night security at a US Army nuclear weapons site. We first went into the indoor kennel where each dog was caged individually. The dogs all attempted to get at the stranger, me. I was thankful for the chain link enclosures. I was also thankful I did not have to put on the padded suit to evaluate the dogs' ferocity like the NCO did.

I also saw a police dog in action one night on Washington Street in Boston when I was at Fort Devens. The police were attempting to arrest some belligerent drunks involved in a brawl. One of them got loose and rolled under the police wagon and would not come out. The cops poked at him with their batons but he stayed under the truck. Soon, a canine unit arrived and the dog went under the truck barking and growling. The dog did not have to bite and the drunk was happy to come out. That seemed to be handled better than the situation in Alpharetta.
