I want to thank David, Steve, and Jay for the opportunity to share this piece with you all. And contrary to the description above, I do NOT consider myself a copyright expert (more an enthusiast), so if you find yourself on the receiving end of a letter like I received (and Senator Hawley has likely received), consult a competent lawyer about your options.

Thank you Chris. Very informative. I now have an ice cream headache without the calories.

I spent a couple of hours in a numb fugue wondering how I was going to respond to the demand letter that I received (the demand wasn't cheap) before my stubbornness took charge and had me obsessively poring over the subject for the better part of a week. Fortunately, from my Lovecraft research[1], I had plenty of experience dealing with folks making maximalist copyright claims, so I had to dig into the subject a bit, if only to satisfy my curiosity of what the AP were actually entitled to (which I can't discuss, but I am VERY happy with the settlement agreement that I signed), which was the genesis of mapping out the decision tree above.
