I'm not going to speculate on the killer's motives - given that I haven't followed this story all that closely - but folks beating the anti-Asian racism drum are not doing it in isolation in this particular case, but in a wider context of rising anti-Asian violence during the pandemic.

Coverage BEFORE this latest incident:

I have Asian friends who have been worried about their safety throughout the pandemic, and that fear's been escalating in recent weeks. These killings are just another log on the fire.

Note that this isn't a US-only phenomenon:

You would most label me as a "libertard" but would think I would not agree with this article but I do. I actually think you did not go far enough. You left out that sex addiction that is real. One year ago today, I may have thought different. But exactly one year ago, I found that my husband of 20 year is an addict. While he would never kill someone, he did contemplate suicide to end the pain and shame. He has been in treatment and knows many other men (and women) who are sex addicts. And 99% of them would not hurt others but he has met some who did say they thought about it. We need to focus on mental illness. Sex addicts in particular start and stop a lot. They delete the porn app only to add it back on, unsubscribe to porn or escort sites only to resubscribe. They try to remove the temptation and only to be sucked back in. And if you ask any sex addict who frequented massage parlors, they would say that they were serviced by an asian woman. This is not to be racists, it is just a fact, and to ignore the fact is hiding the truth about the sex and porn industry. Porn is highly addictive. Here is a great TEDX on the addictive nature of porn. https://youtu.be/wSF82AwSDiU
