A veteran friend of mine has a channel on YouTube, and one of the things he has said is that he (and other veterans) think that thanking him for his service on Memorial Day isn't necessarily appropriate as it's not really the point of the holiday - and Veterans' Day serves that purpose.
I don't think anyone will snap at thanking them, just something to keep in mind.
