Been meaning to respond Jay, it just got lost in the shuffle, Walter was an honorable man. He was a statesman which cannot be said about many from either party these days. I grew up in Minnesota and loved Humbert Humphrey. I used to tape his speeches and watch them to try and emulate his speaking style, his ability as a story teller and draw people in. Now days, it's almost as if politicians measure success by how many people they can push away.

Mondale's biggest downfall was his inability to be Hubert. Alongside him he was simply boring and uninteresting. It's not a fair characterization because Humphrey was a one of a kind. When i read of Fritz's passing i said a silent prayer and wished we had more like him.

Humphrey definitely had substance and was both personable and good on the stump. Humphrey may have been president if he did not serve as Johnson's VP. And Mondale, despite his competency, did suffer being viewed in Humphrey's shadow and having ties with an unpopular President Carter at the end of his term. Today it seems an entertaining politician is also viewed as having substance only because they entertain. Glad to have taken time to think of both men.
