Are pilots subject to psychological testing before licensing? Are aberrant behavior observation programs in place? Both are required for reactor operators. I assume random drug testing is a requirement for pilots. I remember the Egyptian, German and Malaysian incidents very well. Mental illness can be sudden and unexpected. One of my relatives (by marriage) was a mild-mannered florist who sold his business and retired. When he was about 75 years old, he killed his wife because she started reading the morning newspaper before he was through with it.

As the country song says: "God is great, beer is good, people are crazy."

Wow, Curtis, that’s horrible.

There was a murder-suicide in my family a few years ago where an adult child killed his elderly mother. You just never know.

There’s no formal psychological testing but airline pilots have to renew their medical certificate every six months. This mostly deals with physical health though. Going much beyond that relies on self-reporting or observation and reports by third parties.

The truth is that many professional pilots are often resistant to seeking treatment of any kind because of the fear that it will have to be reported to the FAA and affect their medical certificate/ability to fly.

I have read about pilots' hesitancy to report health problems. Losing a certification would be tough to deal with and no affordable insurance policy could make up for the loss. Stay safe. I still want the G800 test drive report.
