I never attended a racially integrated school. I was never aware of segregation as a policy until my seventh-grade teacher spent a week or so talking about it and why it was a waste of talent and money. As far as I know that teacher was never criticized for her views or lessons. The subject never came up again in the county public schools I attended which was about 50 miles from where you grew up. By the time I was a junior in college, civil rights was a hot topic but the colleges were not integrated until after I graduated.
