It is costly to become a pilot as it is expensive to obtain the air time necessary. In 1987, I loved a terrific guy who was scheduled for a second interview with a major airline and the future looked bright for us. To get a few extra hours, he volunteered to accompany another pilot in the small company for which he flew in a Rockwell 690A. He was killed when the plane crashed. I know that is not a common experience, but it highlights the pursuit of flight hours is not without peril.

I’m so sorry to hear that.

The accident rate is higher for small piston planes than for airliners and jets, but it has thankfully got to better.

My God, how awful. Even that long ago it seems unfair and painful. Back in the mid 80s I had to sneak out to take flying lessons with a local instructor who kept his plane at Pease AFB (he was a retired USAF Colonel). My mother was dead set against it.
