My cover photo on facebook says STOP THE LIES. I find I am commenting that way many times a day. I have been blocked by real life friends for posting the truth. But I will continue. As I mentioned before my number one issue this election is lying. God hates it and so do I.
That’s why “conspiracy theories” are only theories….cuz they lack evidence. If someone had evidence for their cockamamie theories, they would be more than theories.
The problem with 538 and RCP is they both include obviously garbage polls that are used to manipulate their averages. 538 does a better job of weighting them, but at some point all the weighting ends up not working when enough garbage floods the zone.
Good example: a poll yesterday from a source that appears partisan and totaled up to 101%. It's in both averages.
Regarding truth being objective: I don't agree and have typically been of the mind that facts are objective, truth is subjective. My reasoning: two people can witness the same event from different viewpoints, and come away with two different perceptions about said event. Both may "tell the truth" about the event, and their particular truths may even be able to be synthesized into a more factual truth than either would be alone.
I’d say there’s one factual truth, even if people have different perspectives/viewpoints. In the case of the witnesses, they may not be lying but they may still be wrong. They may not have enough facts to know the truth and not realize it.
Also, people can look at the same truth/facts and arrive at different conclusions/opinions. The unemployment rate is a fact, but is it good or bad?
There are definitely a lot questions on the polling average, and I do think it’s possible that some partisan polls are collected with shaping the narrative in mind. 538 has a good podcast that delves into the nuts and bolts of polling.
Silver just doesn't want to admit the vulnerabilities of his system. Part of it is just the nature of what he's doing: giving a probabilistic outcome for clicks/views, and be able to say "I wasn't wrong, look at the percentages!"
A corollary is that people who are judging public figures find more damaging information to condemn those they hate and more information justifying the ones they would defend.
And this is why i read/follow you guys. As a Godless (higher power), communist/socialist/fascist (liberal) i know my point of view will always be deemed as biased and without merit. In fact, it's why i don't waste me precious time on left-leaning sites. I know the mantra inside and out.
Instead, i love to read conservatives who have remained true to their beliefs and not bought into the bullshit trump has been shoveling for years. Only a fool would watch the charade of the 39 minute dance video/town hall gathering and not question his mental state of mind. Or, better yet his interview yesterday in Chicago when he became a petulant child because the interviewer pressed him to actually try an answer the question rather than spew nonsense.
The reality is most of his garbage is simply that; garbage. To your point David, the conspiracy theories are dangerous and deadly. The number of threats to poll workers and state election officials has exploded. The real question/dilemma will hit us once they start counting votes. It's going to be ugly.
As i read the craziness, i would love to have a one-to-one, away from the maddening crowd and just say: "Do you really believe this crap?" I know many would say "yes." Like the commenters below who continually belittle your arguments David, my next question would be; "are you real, or are you a bot?" Honestly, i would expect a bot to be smarter, but what the hell do i know as a Godless, commie?

I agree to a great extent.

A good read about polling here. https://www.natesilver.net/p/are-republican-pollsters-flooding

Thanks for keeping it real.
Yet another litany of lies about Jan. 6th from David Thornton. Physician, heal thyself!
Exactly describing what you wrote…. “If it sounds too stupid to be true, it probably is.”….
