Culture is upstream of religion. This which is why most people in the Middle East are muslims and not christians and why most people in the USA are christians not buddhist.
Interestingly many christians in the USA inform me that they are biblical christians who follow the 'clear and simple' meaning of the bible, which tells me they don't read much of the bible (cos it isn't clear and simple) but get their ideas from their culture ( probably mediated via Fox News).
