Great read Merrie, and yet another in the long story line of everything trump touches dies. In this case, religion being compromised by a man bereft of any human or emotional qualities. His only real trait is as a narcissist who has to be at the center of attention; always.
Think not? Imagine the arrogance of any single human being telling us he has never had cause to ask God for forgiveness. All of us have sinned, most of us are smart/humble enough to ask forgiveness. Not the donald...i rest my case.
Best wishes in finding a safe place where religion and trumpy politics aren't one in the same.
I don't even understand the term "evangelical." Isn't all Christianity by definition "evangelical?" Has there ever been an organization more dedicated to taking Christianity global than the Catholic church? Don't the Methodists have missionaries too?
The Greek root of the term means the gospel. I had to dig out my notes from when I attended Christian Missionary Alliance church with my mother. She was actually raised in the Pilgrim Holiness church, which was very strict. According to my notes to be an Evangelical with a capital E one must believe the gospel is the ultimate authority. An Evangelical believes that to be truly saved you must be born again, Evangelicals believe Jesus died to atone for our sins and lastly is the belief that the Bible is inerrant. Evangelics exist mostly in Protestant churches. Many churches have missionaries. When my mother died last year, her final request was that instead of flowers, we make donations in her name to the missionary fund. At the time of her passing, she was attending a Baptist Church.
The media and Maga have redefined the word to mean any Christian or anyone posing as a Christian . I have even seen the term applied to Catholics by the media and Maga, and that was never taught. I had a woman in the grocery store. Tell me well I’m not a Christian. I’m a Catholic.
Anyone who believes any part of the definition I gave above of evangelism could not support Donald Trump, could not vote for Donald Trump, can only pray for Donald Trump . He is not a Christian and he has as much as admitted the same when he gave an interview and was asked if he ever asked God for forgiveness and he said he doesn’t bring God into this.
I remain an Evangelical, and I share the gospel, and I truly believe every word in the Bible . I do not however, publicly call myself evangelical because of the redefinition.
My husband and I left the Lutheran Church 12 years ago because of apostasy and heresy . We have searched for 12 years for a home church but living in Miami it is very difficult to find a church where English speakers are welcomed, and the Bible is taught verse by verse. For the past couple years, we have done online church and we are very faithful and hardly ever miss a Sunday. We have found other ways to share a fellowship with like-minded believers.. I feel very sad for what you are going through and completely empathize.
Ok, now this is perhaps one of the most disturbing/disappointing topics you have approached but appropriately so. During my every Thursday morning Bible study (10 months and still in John!), we had a few ladies weeping and fearful of the election results. It is a very diverse group of 10-12 Christian folks with little in common besides the love of a deep dive into Scripture. I did not vote for Trump for a number of reasons, but I do not vilify those who did, nor do I even shake my head in disbelief to signal my non-approval. So I guess I don' t understand as much as I would like to as well. It's like..."hey, God is still in control" and "find the blessing in the electorate engagement", or maybe other positive spins on the overall election and not just who won the top job against your vote. Thanks for listening and thanks for the challenging commentary.
This isn't about Trump winning! We had an election. He won. I hope it's not as bad as I fear. It's about the fact that I sit in a choir loft with people who don't believe in vaccines! Would YOU want to be cheek to jowl with a bunch of people that homeschool so they won't have to get their kids vaccinated? (Incidentally, there was a big Covid wave that hit a couple of months ago. The 2 ladies who sit next to me both got it. I did not.) It's about the fact that someone advised me to take Ivermectin when I got sick. It's about the fact that I am afraid to open my mouth around anyone because what I want to say is "are you stupid or just crazy?" and that's just not real Christian. And the final straw is that my deacon - the one person who is supposed to be my mentor and support system - is a full on MAGA fan, who chose to literally bring his political banner into the church and dismissed me when I told him it made me uncomfortable. I'm glad your bible study is a safe space for those ladies weeping over the election results. I don't have that. I was afraid to go for fear of showing my anguish (or worse.) So I didn't go.
Look, I know a lot of people who voted for Trump. I have a friend whose grandparents escaped Cuba. He could never support the Democrats because anything smacking of socialism it abhorent to him. My sister explained 8 years ago that the current system just wasn't working for her and she was hoping maybe an outside would change things, but she certainly didn't hold him up as a moral example. And I know a lot of people who have supported him because "abortion." These are all good people - none of whom would be caught dead wearing a red hat at the grocery store, much less CHURCH. My deacon? He's a big fan. His exact words to me were "He's my guy!" Someone came over to ask him how the rally went, and I was forced to walk away rather than get ugly. That I don't get. I just don't get how anyone could stand there in the church foyer and share the details of a Trump rally, unless it was to shake their heads and lament his conduct. But apparently, I'm the only one in the whole church who has these reservations, so what should I do?

I will never accept the liberal or media definition of evangelical. Evangelicals could not vote for that man!

Do you vote for a moral example or for someone to change how the nation is governed?
No live and let live for the cat ladies.
