"Sometimes doing the right thing for the country means forsaking the party. Unfortunately, I don’t see many Republicans who are patriotic enough to put their country above their careers and their party."

Is it even proper to call the GOP a "party" anymore? I mean, it's one on paper, but there is no longer anything resembling a coherent platform - just taking whatever Trump feels that day and pretending that they were behind it all along? It's definitely more of a fan club or a charismatic cult than a coherent political association coordinating to advance a set or policy principles.

I bring this up, because it make me question what is even left to salvage that is still contained WITHIN the GOP, as opposed to having all one needs to start rebuilding a conservative political party completely independent of the personality cult.

Can we once and for all stop calling the Grand Old Party the GOP. There's simply no resemblance to the Reagan/Bush republicans; not in platform or policies. And most assuredly, not in temperament. Lord knows, trump was a democrat long before he saw an opportunity to sweep through those longing for the politics of hatred and grievance.

I said it the other day on the Bulwark and i will repeat it here; change the name. Call them trumplicans or magakins or anything that fits the narrative they embrace. We know this for certain...it's not the "Grand Old Party."

Give trump his due and name the party of followers after him. He'll eat it up. Feeding his ego is at the top of the platform list so just be proud of who and what you have become. Well, amost at the top, first is to pay all his legal bills. Now that they've (the RNC) has killed the proposal not to pay his bills, we know how this will play out don't we?

I agree, btut the shorthand is useful, especially in the limited character of Twitter posts.

I get it David and it will be a hard sell; unless of course trump leads the charge to change the name to something he loves. When i look back over the carcasses of dead and buried republicans who refused to bend the knee and kiss the ring, i see that he may even relish in the idea of rubbing their faces in it (well after they are dead and buried; thinking of you John McCain, a good and honorable man).

The evolution/slash revolution is near on complete. Time to bid farewell to a different (dare i say better) time in America where two parties had differing opinions and ideologies but could work in the spirit of mutual cooperation for the country. Now, winning is the only thing that matters.

Far be in from me to pick their acronym. Give trump his magic maker that he used to re-direct hurricanes and let him have fun rebranding the group following him. Seems only fair and reasonable to me. The one concession i always make to trump is his sheer genius at marketing.

I guess today there are lies and damn lies. I will be the first in line for any President who would refuse to leave office. If the accusations today were truth Donald Trump would still be President. No one seems to care that after Biden was confirmed by electors, Trump stepped down. Unhappy, Yes, insurrectionist no. If that were true he would have raised an army. I am MAGA, as such, we believe in the system our Founding Fathers established for the presidential election process. We do not believe in arming our DOJ against citizens. Every President in American history has made mistakes, none excluded. All human beings are flawed. I find it interesting the word insurrection is now being changed the same way the word Vaccine was. Thanks to Bill Clinton the whole of the English Language "IS" now dependent upon elite use of it. I don't know if Trump can win back the Presidency or not. Democrats and Deep State have proven they will not release power easily. So now it is a matter of what those reading these posts will do when the Rigging of an election or abuse of the DOJ happens. It is not Trumpism it is MAGA - Make America Great Again. Trump was just smart enough to act as a drum major and get ahead of the movement. He also happens to believe what we, as MAGA, believe. What was it Lee Iaccoca said: "Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way".

That was a lot of word salad.

What was the point of Jan 6 if not to change the counting of EC votes? What was the point of the fake elector scheme if not to fraudulently change the results?

Attempting and being terrible at a crime does not absolve one of having tried to commit a crime.

Why did Congress pass a law regarding challenging Electoral Votes if what Trump did was illegal. What Trump did was exactly what Dems tried to do in 2016, which was perfectly legal. Because it's Trump is the only reason Elites went nuts. Trump in fact left office after Biden was declared. That was not insurrection no matter how much people try to make it so. Matter of fact: The President has a duty to call out Rigged elections. Sad it has taken years to find out what really happened.

The law was about counting Electoral College votes and that VPOTUS is solely there in a ceremonial role. It's called patching a hole.

Trump only left because his final chance was to stop the EC vote. We have Mike Pence to thank for that.

Since Congress has passed a law what you say is exactly right now. It was not the fact before Biden. The Democratic Congress and RINO's passed a law after the last presidential election. Trump used every Constitutional means. Right or wrong the law now make the point mute.

Right and wrong matters.

Well, to use your word salad terminology, right or wrong depends upon whose side of the narrative you are on. Everyone with half a brain (which obviously leaves out our president) knows every side now has a narrative they are putting forward, even you and I. In case you haven't notice MAGA is entrenched some polls are talking to them and some are not. The problem for your side is the most recent history and how America has changed after the (supposed) pandemic. NEVER LET A GOOD CRISIS GO TO WASTE, huh? I am not one, but the silent majority will speak. Then we'll see.

And the chants of "hang Mike Pence" shouted at the base of the gallows they built was just a neck tie party showcasing trump ties?

There is zero, ZERO proof of the big lie regarding a stolen election. 2000 Mules, pure and utter bullshit, 60 failed court cases and all of the lame claims, when pressed, both Rudy Guiliani and Sydney Powell folded like cheap suits. Is Brad Raffensperger part of the deep state as well? Did FOX pay out $787 million dollars because the Dominion claims were real?

At some point the reality of who and what trump is will be the deciding factor in the 2024 election. Help me get my head around your support Terry: Two questions; Is trump a liar? Is trump a moral/religious man? Yes or no on both is sufficient.

Yes, Trump sometimes stretches the truth to the point of unrecognizable. Every Politician does. This does not change the fact his policies were great for the middle class. The wealthy could care less about the middle class. Where do you fit? If Trump had someone put a gun to Pence's head you might have a point. Mike turned out to be a swamp creature.

I want to interject one quick point here. Trump economic policy was a disaster for the middle class. His tariffs constituted one of the largest tax increases in decades (tariffs are taxes and taxes are paid by the end consumer) and his trade wars started a manufacturing recession and hit farmers hard, requiring massive bailouts that were paid for by debt.

Aside from his total lack of respect for law and the Constitution, he was an incompetent national leader.

I was just about to jump in David and respond, you saved me the effort. Terry did ask about where i fit in? Fair question and you be the judge. I retired 20 years ago with my best years earnings in 2002 when i made $71,000 including my car allowance. I was the president of a 7,500 member local union.

We had packinghouse workers under contract and i watched large packers destroy what were once well paid union jobs by bringing in "illegals." They were hard workers and documents were easily forged and better yet, when one got injured from crazy line speeds, the employers simply fired them.

I cringe when people tell me about all those damned illegals. Without them the country couldn't run. Trump's policies were meaningless to the middle class; the beneficiaries were the corporations and the ultra-wealthy. I guess they needed the tax cuts.

Truth be told, neither Biden's policies nor Trump's make a dime's worth of difference in my retirement. What does matter to me is having to look at my next door neighbor's trump flag flying 24/7, 365 days a year. I resent Christmas cards of politicians and their kids holding AR 15's when gun violence in schools is rampant. I hate when i read comments from politicians like Lt Gov Mark Robinson and statements regarding Jews, gays and woman that is at best shameful.

The list is long and endless regarding all trump has delivered upon our society and the norms i grew to love and respect have been shattered by a man who has no compassion and is both immoral and amoral.

I disagree. Unfair trade practices and theft of intellectual property (not to mention national security secrets) must be addressed. Tariffs are no more harmful than extreme inflation, probably less so.

Tariffs are something to be used against specific sectors/countries. Blanket tariffs on all imports is just adding a 10% tax to everything.

What was it Putin said in the Carlson interview. Something to the effect "The world has changed and America is still stuck in its old ways". Trump understands this and his action pissed people off. I case you haven't noticed the West's corruption is causing the lose of a lot of countries who should be on our side. Russia is the perfect example. Putin is a bad guy, he has plan, and America's corruption is destroying us because money is more important to the powerful, than freedom.

When Trump was President I did not lose 20% of my retirement income to inflation. China was held accountable for dumping "crap" (steel and other commodities) on US markets. Trump put a stop to it. If what you say is true about farmers (and I happen to live in Americas Breadbasket) there would have been tractors on Pennsylvania Avenue. The field to table model in America feeds the world. Meat doesn't come from your freezer. There are processes, logistics, and market timing in all things economic. OK, Trump got rich by being smart and learning how to manage the section of the economy he was involved in. He is not close to as bad as Congress who use insider trading to get filthy rich. I have always wondered how the money laundering schemes worked for Epstein and others. Well, the Biden Family Model for laundering has been exposed thanks to his drug addict son. I can go on and on but suffice it to say: It ain't Trump! It is the crooked bastards selling out America who are in charge of the whole government.

You should blame Trump for his crappy response to COVID.

Question: do you want low prices or full employment?

Lewis Grizzard was an entertaining writer. He and Paul Hemphill gave the AJC an unbeatable pair. Lewis was funny and somewhat conservative. He wrote about the never-ending winters in Chicago, where he once worked, and the Georgia Bulldogs (not my thing), and the superiority of boxer shorts over tighty whities, and kudzu. I last saw Lewis trying to regain his swing, after getting a heart valve from a pig, on the practice range at Great Waters. He never recovered.

Paul Hemphill was more liberal. He was an Auburn graduate and played baseball. He wrote a most thoughtful account of the south and migration from the south during the dust bowl and great depression. If you can find a copy, I recommend you read "Bright Lights and Country Music, the Nashville Sound". One of his unforgettable lines is about his dad being a truck driver and hating blacks because he knew they could drive trucks too. Too bad he never quit cigarettes.

I have disagreements with Haley and her failure to criticize Trump for years is a big part of that. She was the better and only remaining option for anti-Trump conservatives, however.
